antoniomin12 Nov 2021 08:17Hello everyone, I am planning to get a Pax wardrobe from Ikea, but I have an important question beforehand: Is the Pax wardrobe easy to modify? Specifically, I am interested in how simple it is to change the size afterwards, move shelves, or replace doors. It would also be helpful to know if the wardrobe can be easily expanded later on, or if that usually involves a lot of effort. I have already read through some forums, but the opinions vary a lot. Maybe someone here has practical experience with modifying it and can share how difficult or easy it actually is. Thanks in advance!
Just because Ikea markets it as "modular" doesn't automatically mean that remodeling it is really easy. Sure, you can move shelves and swap doors – that's technically straightforward – but if you plan to change the basic structure, such as the width or height, then it becomes more of a construction project that can’t be done quickly on the side. Additionally, many users underestimate the effort involved in disassembly and rebuilding. Especially when the cabinet is already fully set up, it quickly becomes inconvenient.

- Adjusting shelves: Simply remove the shelf supports from the pre-drilled holes and reinsert them at the desired height.
- Changing doors: Doors can be lifted off the hinges and replaced with new ones. This usually does not require special tools.
- Changing size: This is the most complex part! You cannot simply widen or reduce individual modules (e.g., the carcass). You need to completely disassemble the wardrobe and reassemble it, possibly with new components.
- Extension: If you want to expand the wardrobe, this only works by purchasing an additional module and placing them side by side. A fixed connection is not provided, but you can create your own screws or fasteners.
Common mistakes during modifications include ignoring the load capacity of the shelves or not considering the door dimensions after alterations.

A few months ago, I personally started the attempt to modify the Pax and was somewhat overwhelmed in places because the instructions are mainly focused on assembly, not on modification situations. It is important to stay patient. Small changes, such as moving shelves, are really no problem. Larger alterations require a lot of time and patience, so I recommend working with two people.
I understand the concern about how complex the renovation can be. For me, the doors were particularly challenging since I wanted to switch to different models. It worked out fairly well, but it’s not something you can do quickly. Important: Make sure the door dimensions fit perfectly; otherwise, you may have issues with closing later on.
