Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to build a kitchen island in my new apartment using the Ikea Metod system. It is especially important to me that the island offers plenty of storage space while being stable and functional at the same time. My question is: How do I properly build a kitchen island with a lot of storage? Which modules and combinations are best suited, and what should I pay special attention to regarding structural stability and assembly? Are there practical tips on how to optimize storage without limiting the free movement in the kitchen?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

I hadn’t planned for ground anchors since the modules are heavy. Do you think they are really necessary, or is it enough to properly adjust the leveling feet? Usually, it is sufficient to securely fasten the Metod modules with connecting fittings and carefully adjust the height-adjustable feet on uneven floors. Ground anchors are generally not needed if the island is stable and not placed on a smooth surface.
Regarding the countertop: for kitchen islands, more solid surfaces such as Dekton are recommended because they are durable and heat resistant. However, you need to ensure that the mounting is secure by using a sturdy substructure and adequate fastening or adhesive methods. Ikea offers compatible countertops or countertop supports, especially when using Metod as the base.
Hey serena42, your planning sounds really well thought out! 🍀
A little tip from my own experience: Take as much time as possible when planning the drawers and use inserts for cutlery, spices, and similar items. This way, the island won’t feel cluttered, and you’ll find everything in no time.
And don’t worry about assembly! Metod usually fits together quite well; you can definitely do it step by step – in the end, you’ll have a stylish, practical kitchen island that also looks great. Good luck!
