Hello everyone,
I recently purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen unit and noticed that while the drawers are sturdy, they unfortunately do not have a soft-close function. I would like to retrofit soft-close drawers because I prefer the drawers to close more smoothly and quietly.
My question to you is: How can I add soft-close functionality to an existing Metod system without having to replace the entire drawer? Are there specific modules that can be easily integrated? Or do the drawer slides need to be completely replaced?
I would also appreciate tips on tools, installation time, and any potential pitfalls. Additionally, I’m interested in whether Ikea’s soft-close products are the best option here or if there are recommended alternatives that are compatible.
Thank you in advance for your support!

If you want, I can give you a checklist before the installation so you don’t overlook anything. That would be really helpful! I prefer to stay organized and would rather not realize on-site that I forgot something important.
Also: I’m fairly experienced with DIY, but I don’t own a full professional toolset. Is a regular cordless drill enough? Or is it worth investing in something more specialized, like a corner clamp set or a specific drill bit?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Hello!
A cordless screwdriver with the appropriate bits is usually sufficient. Clamps are only necessary if you need to drill new holes and secure the panels—usually not essential for the Ikea Metod system.
The checklist could look like this:
- Cordless screwdriver + screwdriver bits (Phillips and flathead)
- Tape measure to check the length of the rails
- Optional: drill (max. 4mm (0.16 inches)) and drill clamp if new screw holes are needed
- Patience and a clean working area
Tip: Hold the drawer fronts firmly when removing them, as they can shift otherwise.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask! I’m happy to help.

I can tell you, retrofitting soft-close on Metod drawers is actually quite doable and adds a lot of convenience! That’s absolutely true! 🙂 I recently installed soft-close myself, and since then the kitchen feels much smoother when closing 😄.
My tip: After installation, be patient with the slides. New soft-close mechanisms often need a few cycles to break in and work smoothly and quietly.
Enjoy the clicking and gentle closing—it really makes the kitchen feel more premium!

If you have any questions, just ask! I’m happy to help.Just a quick tip for installation: Don’t tighten the screws too much, or the panels may warp. If everything isn’t fitting properly, it’s better to loosen them and realign.
Just a quick note: Soft-close modules are often compatible with the original Ikea Metod full-extension slides. So if you don’t want to replace everything, you can sometimes just retrofit the damping components.
Whether this works for you depends on the model – it’s worth taking a close look before replacing the entire set of slides.
