Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to build a kitchen island in my new apartment using the Ikea Metod system. It is especially important to me that the island offers plenty of storage space while being stable and functional at the same time. My question is: How do I properly build a kitchen island with a lot of storage? Which modules and combinations are best suited, and what should I pay special attention to regarding structural stability and assembly? Are there practical tips on how to optimize storage without limiting the free movement in the kitchen?
I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Hello serena42,
for plenty of storage space, I recommend using especially tall base cabinets, about 80 cm deep (31.5 inches). Make sure to have sturdy connections between the modules so that the island does not wobble. It's best to integrate several drawers, as they are more practical than doors. For the countertop, you should choose thicker options to ensure it stays stable.

That’s a good point, but I wonder if special corner connectors or reinforcement profiles are necessary for that, especially if the island is freestanding. Does Ikea Metod include these, or do you have to purchase them separately? Also, what about floor anchoring? Is the weight of the modules enough, or do you need additional floor anchors?

Regarding storage space: Are tall base cabinets always really practical? Sometimes they reduce visibility, especially for deeper islands.

Hello,
be sure to use the Metod connecting fittings for the cabinets that Ikea supplies. They provide good stability. For attaching the countertop, it is best to use a thick chipboard or an Egger ceiling panel as a substructure. Storage capacity is also increased by drawer inserts and organization systems – these are essential for keeping everything clear and organized.

Building the kitchen island with Metod is so much fun!

It’s really important to think early on about what you want to include. If you need a lot of storage, I recommend a combination of tall cabinets and wide drawers—this way you can fit everything in! You can have the countertop overhang and use it, for example, as a breakfast bar.

A tip: build the island as modular as possible, so you can adjust or add to it later! So don’t worry, it will definitely work out!

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t planned on ground anchors so far because the modules are quite heavy. Do you think they are really necessary, or is it enough to properly adjust the leveling feet?

Also, I’m curious if you have preferred materials for worktops that work well for a kitchen island? I was thinking of Dekton or laminate but I’m unsure how the installation works with Ikea Metod.
