Hello everyone, I am planning to use IKEA Metod countertops in my new kitchen but am unsure about the best protective measures to keep the countertops in good condition over time.

I am particularly interested in recommendations regarding surface protection (e.g., sealants), heat and moisture protection, as well as advice on proper everyday use to maintain the countertop’s appearance and prevent warping or stains. Are there any specific products that have proven effective? Or practical tips for care and handling?

I would appreciate it if someone with solid knowledge or personal experience could help.

I want to emphasize this tip once again: heat protection is a real insider secret! My Metod countertop has seen many hot pans – but always with a trivet 😊

A little care, and the countertop stays in great condition.

And for those who want to be extra safe: there are special heat-resistant trivets that look stylish and are very practical.

Great, thank you very much for the detailed explanations about edge lacquer. That really helps with the preparation.

One last question regarding maintenance: What are your experiences with oiled versus laminated countertops in IKEA Metod? Is re-oiling recommended at all, or is it rather contraindicated?

Very good question! Most Metod panels are laminated or melamine-coated, meaning they have a plastic layer that protects the wood underneath. These laminated surfaces are not designed for re-oiling; oil does not penetrate and can even make the surface feel greasy or spotty.

In contrast, IKEA also offers solid wood countertops that are specifically oiled, and re-oiling is part of their maintenance.

For the standard Metod panels without real wood surfaces, I advise against using oils or waxes – this can damage the laminate or cause uneven discoloration.

My recommendation: For laminated countertops, always follow the manufacturer's care instructions and use mild water-based cleaning. For genuine wood countertops, re-oiling is standard.

Just a quick addition: I once treated a foil-coated Metod panel with oil, but the result was not good – the oil didn’t absorb properly, and the surface felt sticky.

Since then, I’ve only used a mild soap solution and water for cleaning. It works great and still looks excellent after 2 years!
