uscathari919 Apr 2019 08:34Hello everyone, I am planning to use IKEA Metod countertops in my new kitchen but am unsure about the best protective measures to keep the countertops in good condition over time.
I am particularly interested in recommendations regarding surface protection (e.g., sealants), heat and moisture protection, as well as advice on proper everyday use to maintain the countertop’s appearance and prevent warping or stains. Are there any specific products that have proven effective? Or practical tips for care and handling?
I would appreciate it if someone with solid knowledge or personal experience could help.

Good start, I’m happy to provide a brief overview of protective measures for IKEA Metod countertops:
- Regular cleaning: Use only mild cleaning agents and avoid abrasive cleaners to prevent damage to the surface.
- Moisture protection: Countertops are usually laminated, so it is important to promptly remove any water accumulation.
- Heat protection: Do not place hot pots directly on the countertop, as the laminate can warp.
- Avoid scratches: Use cutting boards, never cut directly on the countertop.
- Sealing: IKEA generally does not recommend additional sealing, as the countertops are factory-treated.
I advise reading the manufacturer’s instructions and focusing mainly on mechanical and thermal protection. If anyone has personal experience with specific care products, please share!

I can only confirm that! 😄
A little anecdote: I once left a pot standing without a trivet, and the surface film warped slightly at that spot – not a big deal, but annoying. So, pot trivets are definitely a lifesaver for Metod cooktops.
Oh, and a cutting board is also an absolute must-have, otherwise it quickly looks like a little kitchen raid. 😉

Great to see this topic generating so much interest! 😊 I believe that with a little care during use, the Metod countertop lasts a very long time and looks really beautiful.
What I always do:
- Wipe it down immediately after cooking and washing,
- never place hot pans directly on the surface,
- and I use traditional natural wax oil for maintenance (always very compatible).
The countertops look like new, and I’m extremely satisfied!

It is important to handle the board carefully from the very beginning.
Many people underestimate the impact of moisture on the edges, especially when the countertop has been cut or adjusted – the cut edges are often not completely waterproof. Sealing these edges with a special edge sealant or water-resistant wood preservative is very effective.
Regular cleaning with a damp cloth is sufficient; avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive sponges! Heat protection should also be taken seriously, as the laminated surface is quite sensitive.
