Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install new METOD cabinets from Ikea in my kitchen and want to use sliding doors to make the best use of the available space. Specifically, I am interested in how to build Ikea METOD cabinets with sliding doors in the most space-saving way without sacrificing functionality. Are there any special installation tips or mechanisms that work particularly well for tight kitchen spaces or narrow hallways? If anyone has experience with different types of sliding doors, I would like to know how they perform in everyday use and what to consider during installation, especially regarding integration with existing METOD components. How does the daily use of sliding doors feel? For me, sliding doors in a METOD kitchen initially seemed like a great solution because they created more room to move around. However, there are a few points to keep in mind:

- The tracks require regular cleaning, as dust easily accumulates there and makes sliding more difficult.
- Especially with frequent and quick opening and closing, you can notice small tolerances in the system, which are harder to fix with larger doors.
- Children or pets can sometimes get fingers caught because sliding doors are mechanically more open to small fingers than regular hinged doors.

This is not meant to discourage, but rather to encourage considering your personal everyday situation.

In addition to the points mentioned so far: when planning sliding doors for METOD, the weight should also be considered.

The door fronts are usually made of MDF or particleboard, sometimes coated with foil or paint, and can be quite heavy depending on their dimensions. For large cabinets, it is therefore advisable to use the system with two tracks per door, which increases stability and reduces running noise.

Door height is equally important: taller doors require more precision during installation to prevent sticking while sliding.

Personally, I also recommend not making sliding doors too wide in narrow corridors to keep the weight manageable and avoid overloading the tracks.

From my personal experience, when combining Ikea METOD cabinets with sliding doors, thorough planning before installation is absolutely essential.

- Measure the room and the intended cabinet areas precisely
- Consider how frequently the doors will be used and whether the solution will remain practical in the long term

I encountered a situation where the sliding doors were not perfectly aligned with the existing tracks. This caused slight overloading on one side, resulting in poor movement and minor damage. It helped to reinforce the structure with additional supports and some ingenuity to stabilize the setup.

In summary, sliding doors save space, yes, but they definitely come with handling challenges if the installation is not carefully planned.

To round off the discussion, I would like to address the different designs.

Ikea offers various sliding door options for METOD, including models with glass that visually enlarge the room.

An important consideration during planning is the following:

- Should the sliding door be flush with the surface or slightly protrude?
- Do you need the sliding doors purely for practical purposes, or also as an aesthetic solution?

I completely agree with this. A narrow cabinet with a wide sliding door often puts strain on the mechanism in practice – it’s better to have several narrow doors or a combination of sliding doors and hinged doors.

This way, you find a good balance between appearance, durability, and space utilization.
