Fuharoun4424 Dec 2021 09:17Good morning everyone, I have a problem with an Ikea Metod kitchen drawer that has been squeaking continuously for some time. The squeaking occurs when opening and closing and is quite annoying, especially because it’s not just a temporary noise but happens repeatedly no matter how often I use the drawer. My specific question is: How can I permanently and effectively fix this squeaking, taking into account both the assembly and the mechanics of the Metod drawer? It would be great if you could explain exactly which parts might be involved, how to proceed, and which tools or lubricants are best suited. Thanks in advance!
Hello Fuharoun44, your issue with the squeaking Ikea Metod drawer is a relatively common problem, often caused by mechanical factors. There are some diagnostic steps and repair methods I can recommend:
- First, you should completely remove the drawer from the furniture. To do this, lift it slightly at the front and pull it straight out.
- Then check the drawer slides (full-extension runners) for dirt, sand grains, or foreign objects that could cause the slide to stick or squeak. Clean all moving parts thoroughly with a lint-free cloth.
- Next, I recommend lubricating the drawer slides. There are specially suited lubricants for this. I usually prefer silicone spray because it is non-sticky and does not attract dirt – important for long-lasting effect.
- Before applying the lubricant, the area should be dry and dust-free. You can apply the lubricant selectively to the metal guides and the small rollers/sliders.
- After that, screw the drawer back in and test opening and closing it.
If the squeaking continues, it is often due to the plastic glides or misaligned screws. Check whether all screws on the drawer slides and the drawer front are still tight – sometimes a slight retightening improves the running behavior.
One small tip: Sometimes the plastic glide material is worn out or deformed. In that case, I would recommend ordering replacement parts directly from Ikea; they offer these glide elements individually.
Could you also describe whether the squeaking sounds more metallic or rather like a soft rubbing? This can often help to better narrow down the source of the problem.

It is important not to use anything oily that attracts dust. Additionally, patience when experimenting is helpful, especially if you don’t have much experience with furniture mechanics. And please remember not to overtighten the screws when readjusting the drawer, to avoid damaging the material.

Fuharoun4424 Dec 2021 11:07Thank you for the quick and helpful feedback! The squeaking sounds more metallic but also has a slightly sticking character. I will definitely clean the tracks and treat them with silicone spray. Regarding the screws: I have noticed that the screws on the side rails might already be a bit loose.
Regarding the plastic glide pads: Do you have a recommendation on where to best order the original glide elements? Directly from Ikea? Are there compatible third-party replacements available, or should one strictly use Ikea replacement parts?

Hello Fuharoun44, I would like to address your question about the sliding elements and spare parts in more detail. From my experience, it is actually safest to use original replacement parts from Ikea. The drawer slides and their corresponding sliding elements are sometimes designed to work smoothly only with the correct original parts.
- If you come across an aftermarket replacement, the quality often varies, and you risk that the noises won’t fully disappear despite purchasing new parts, or the mechanism might even get damaged.
- Ikea often provides quite straightforward ways to order individual drawer components, either directly at the store’s service desk or through customer service.
- Replacing the sliding elements requires a bit of skill: the new plastic parts must be properly snapped or slid into place, otherwise the drawer may stick or even jump out.
Regarding the metallic squeaking: this can also be caused by tiny rust spots or insufficiently lubricated edges on the metal profile. If possible, gently smooth rough spots using fine sandpaper, then clean thoroughly and apply lubricant.
Finally, I recommend pulling the drawer fully out and pushing it back in several times after reassembly, so the lubricant spreads evenly.
