Hello everyone,
I am planning to install Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets soon and am particularly interested in integrating sliding doors. Since I have mainly worked with traditional cabinet doors so far, I am missing some details regarding the assembly of Metod units with sliding doors.
My main question is: How can I properly and efficiently assemble Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with sliding doors?
I am especially interested in the following points:
- Are there special fasteners or guide rails I need to consider?
- How can I ensure that the sliding doors operate smoothly without sticking?
- What should I pay special attention to when measuring and planning to ensure the doors fit precisely?
- Are there common pitfalls during installation or tips to simplify the process?
I would greatly appreciate specific advice or a step-by-step explanation, ideally based on experience with this Ikea system. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello eliah56,
to answer your question as thoroughly as possible, here is a detailed process description including technical tips for assembling Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets with sliding doors:
- Planning & Measuring:
Make sure you have the correct sliding door set for Metod, as there are different versions for various cabinet systems (e.g. height, number of doors).
Measure the width and height of the carcass very precisely. Ensure that the cabinet sides are vertical and the floor is level.
- Assembly Steps:
1. Assemble the carcass and check it with a spirit level.
2. Mount the top and bottom tracks exactly parallel. Use a straightedge or temporarily fix a batten for alignment.
3. Prepare the sliding doors, adjust the rollers, and test their function. When clipping them in, lift the doors slightly so the rollers engage properly.
4. Door adjustment is usually done on the rollers or specific adjustment screws. Small Allen keys are often required.
- Common Pitfalls:
- Inaccurate measuring leads to problems when installing the doors.
- Warping of the carcass (e.g. non-right angles) causes sticking.
- Poor mounting of the tracks – screws must be tight and stable.
- Recommendation:
During assembly, make sure the entire cabinet system has a firm and stable base, as later twisting or movement will affect the door function.
One final question: What type of sliding door system are you using exactly? Standard Metod sliding doors, sliding doors with aluminum frames, or possibly smooth fronts with additional fitting technology? Details vary depending on the design.
I can provide more targeted advice if you share this information.

Details vary depending on the design.Hello kulau, thank you for the detailed reply. I am going with the standard Metod sliding door systems, meaning the typical white fronts with Ikea-compatible sliding doors and the included tracks/rollers. Aluminum frames or special versions are not planned for now.
Your tips on aligning and adjusting are already very helpful. I particularly appreciate the recommendation to align the tracks using a straightedge.
If anyone else has experience specifically with the standard sliding door systems, I’d love to hear about it!

The running rails are mounted on the top and bottom of the cabinet. They must be perfectly straight and parallel to avoid jamming.I can only agree with that. In my recent kitchen installations with Metod sliding doors, this was definitely the biggest challenge.
One more tip: When handling the doors during installation, make sure to distribute their weight evenly. Although the sliding door system at Ikea is robust, rough handling during installation can damage the rollers or bend the rail system.
Also important: If the doors rub slightly after assembly, small adjustments to the rollers can often fix the problem. You can loosen the screws on the rollers, correct the position, and then tighten them again.

If anyone has experience specifically with the standard sliding door systems, feel free to share!Yes, I have installed several kitchens using the standard Method sliding door systems. It is important to first secure the top track during door installation and then carefully hang the doors into the bottom rail.
From personal experience, the doors move more easily in the morning when the room is slightly warmer, as the plastic materials of the tracks soften a bit. For consistently good performance, I also recommend regularly inspecting and lightly cleaning the tracks to prevent dust or small debris from affecting smooth operation.
If you like, I can provide a detailed sequence of assembly steps that I have found particularly helpful in my practical experience.
