Hello everyone, I am currently considering whether I can replace my IKEA Metod kitchen fronts myself. The kitchen is already several years old, and I only want to update the fronts without starting a complete kitchen renovation. My main question is: Is it possible to easily replace the IKEA Metod kitchen fronts on your own, without professional help? What specific tools and skills are needed for this, and what should you pay special attention to in order to ensure everything fits properly and remains stable after the replacement? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Geflo44!

I understand your question about the IKEA Metod kitchen fronts. Most people manage it themselves since IKEA has designed the system to be quite user-friendly. It’s important to proceed step by step – first remove the fronts, then check the carcasses, and finally install the new fronts one by one.

Besides tools like a screwdriver or cordless drill, it can be helpful to keep screws and fittings organized, preferably in small bags labeled accordingly. This helps avoid mix-ups.

It’s absolutely normal if something doesn’t fit perfectly the first time – you can make adjustments until everything fits properly. The metal fittings allow for some fine-tuning.

If you’re unsure, I recommend starting with a single front to practice before replacing all the door fronts.

Exactly! I replaced my cabinet fronts myself, and it was really enjoyable. You can immediately see the difference, and the pride of having done it yourself is priceless. Good luck!

In short: Yes, you can do it yourself, provided you know how to remove the screws from the fronts and properly install the fasteners. A bit of patience is helpful.

Thank you for all your feedback!

One thing I’m still curious about: How durable is it when you replace the cabinet fronts yourself? Is there a difference compared to having the kitchen fitter do the replacement? And what happens if you need to readjust the fronts a few times during installation? Could that cause long-term issues with the fittings or the cabinet carcass?

If you work carefully, there is basically no difference in durability. The fittings and screws are sturdy and designed to be assembled and disassembled multiple times.

Readjusting is actually anticipated — the metal fittings have adjustment options to align the fronts. The only important point is not to overtighten the screws repeatedly with too much force, as this can wear out the threads.

On the cabinet body, there should be minimal wear around the standard drill holes if the screws are placed in the designated positions.

In short: you can adjust the fronts multiple times without reducing durability, as long as you proceed carefully.

This matches my experience. The Metod fronts are modular solutions. However, I would recommend handling them with care. In particular, repeatedly attaching and detaching them too often in succession can eventually cause wear on the screw holes.
