Hello everyone, I have been working for some time on improving my IKEA Metod drawer system, which I want to upgrade for my kitchen. Here is my situation: The drawers generally function well, but I feel that sometimes they can be a bit stiff and don’t always open and close smoothly in everyday use. Additionally, I would like to increase the stability and load capacity since I store several heavy kitchen utensils and storage jars in them.

I have already heard that there are various options, such as upgrading to better drawer slides, adding soft-close mechanisms, or installing internal organizers to make better use of the space. My question to you is: What practical methods or modifications would you recommend for specifically and cost-effectively improving an IKEA Metod drawer system, both in terms of smooth operation and enhanced stability? Are there any particular screws, slides, liners, or other components that work especially well?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello sylvain, I would first replace the drawer slides with soft-close versions. These are also available from IKEA as replacement parts and significantly improve opening and closing. For additional stability, you can also install small corner brackets under the drawer base.

Regarding smooth operation: Soft-close drawer slides are recommended, such as the "Metod Soft-Close Slide" model from IKEA, which can also be installed afterward. These help reduce noise and prevent drawers from slamming shut.

For stability and load capacity, it is essential that the drawer bottoms do not show significant sagging. If needed, additional cross braces or metal reinforcements can be glued or screwed underneath the bottom panel.

Additionally, check whether the screws on the side panels are properly secured, and if necessary, reinforce the attachment with wood glue or small wooden blocks.

I can easily understand how frustrating it can be when kitchen drawers don’t slide properly. For me, cleaning the existing drawer slides thoroughly to remove dust and debris helped. Sometimes, lubricating the slides or treating them with a special lubricant before replacing parts makes a difference.

Definitely replace the soft-close rails.

Additionally, you can install plastic dividers inside. These help keep things organized and reduce strain on the drawers by better distributing the contents.

Hello Sylvain, I’m happy to give you a brief tutorial on how to effectively improve your Metod drawer system:

- First, check which drawer slides are currently installed. The Metod system offers different models with and without soft-close features.
- If soft-close slides are not yet installed, you can retrofit the original IKEA slides with dampers. Simply remove the old slides and mount the new ones in exactly the same position, ensuring correct alignment and orientation.
- Check the fastening screws of the drawers. Instability is sometimes caused by loose screws. If necessary, reinforce them with appropriate wood fillers or small washers.
- For increased load capacity, metal brackets can be mounted under the drawer or additional metal supports can be added.
- Inside the drawer: use shelves and internal organizers to evenly distribute the weight.

When assembling, pay close attention to measurements and alignment to ensure the drawers can fully extend without sticking.

If you have specific problems with tilting or hard-to-slide drawers, feel free to describe them in more detail.
