Hello everyone, I have been using the Ikea Pax wardrobe with sliding doors for some time and would like to know the best and most sustainable way to clean it. I am especially interested in how to care for the sliding doors so that the aluminum frames and glass surfaces don’t get scratched or become dull. I’m also wondering if there are any specific cleaners I should definitely avoid because they might damage the tracks or seals. Does anyone have experience with regular cleaning and maintenance, particularly for these sliding doors? I look forward to tips and recommendations that go beyond usual dusting, as I want to find a thorough yet gentle cleaning method.

Hello Katjakeo, I understand your question well, as the combination of glass and aluminum is indeed a delicate matter. Generally, I recommend using a mild glass cleaner or a mixture of water and a little vinegar for the glass surfaces to avoid streaks. The aluminum frames should be wiped with a damp, soft cloth and then dried with a dry cloth to prevent water spots. Regarding the tracks: dust and dirt usually accumulate there. A vacuum cleaner with a narrow nozzle followed by a dry cloth works well. It is important not to use any harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage both glass and aluminum. If your sliding doors have seals, simply wipe them with a damp cloth. I would avoid silicone oils or special lubricants, as they can attract dirt.

I always find it surprising how carefully some people handle Ikea cabinet doors. After all, the surfaces are quite durable and not museum pieces. Of course, you want to avoid scratches, but I wonder: is it really necessary to be so afraid of glass or aluminum cleaners? For my Pax sliding doors, I simply used regular glass cleaner applied to a microfiber cloth and cleaned the doors thoroughly. Of course, no steel wool or anything like that, but that goes without saying.

die Kombination aus Glas und Aluminium wirklich eine sensible Angelegenheit ist.

To be honest, I think that’s an overinterpretation. People make a much bigger fuss about cleaning, especially with furniture that is used every day.

To put a bit more emphasis on the appropriate chemical products: Glass surfaces should be cleaned with a non-abrasive glass cleaner that does not contain ammonia-based substances, in order to prevent oxidation on aluminum. For the aluminum frame, I recommend mild, water-based cleaning lotions that are pH-neutral.

The key point is the cleanliness of the tracks. This is where most dirt accumulates, which over time can cause the doors to operate with difficulty. I prefer a combination of a vacuum cleaner (with a narrow nozzle) followed by gently wiping with a cloth dampened with isopropanol, which leaves no residue.

I consider the use of lubricating oils rather unsuitable, as they can attract dirt and cause debris to remain in the tracks through abrasion. Especially silicone oils can lead to long-term contamination that is very difficult to remove.

Thanks for your previous contributions! It’s especially important to me to thoroughly clean the sliding tracks, as I’ve noticed some slight difficulty in sliding the doors after about a year.

Does anyone happen to have tips on how to completely remove the tracks for a more thorough cleaning? Also, I’m wondering if I should maintain or replace the door seals, in case they become brittle from use.

Regarding glass cleaning: I was planning to use a common glass cleaner spray with a microfiber cloth, but I’ve read that some glass cleaners might leave a cloudy residue. Is that true? Or does this mostly apply to older or specially coated glass?

Removing the rails is quite simple with Ikea Pax sliding doors. The vertical profiles can usually be unhooked. Carefully lift the doors upwards and then unhook them. After that, you can take out the running rails and clean them separately. Wipe the seals, and if necessary, clean them with warm soapy water. You only need to replace them if they are damaged or hardened.
