Hello everyone, I am currently assembling my new Ikea Metod kitchen and I aim to install cabinets with soft-close doors and soft-close drawers. Since I am not a professional but have assembled some furniture before, I want to approach this project correctly from the start to ensure the doors close smoothly and the drawers operate quietly.
My main questions are: Which specific parts do I need exactly for soft-close mechanisms (since Ikea offers different versions), how and in what order should I best assemble the cabinets, what should I pay attention to when adjusting the doors and drawers, and are there any tips to avoid common mistakes or issues from the beginning?
I would really appreciate detailed answers, including advice on the small, seemingly insignificant details that ultimately make a difference. Thank you in advance for your experiences, tips, and tricks!

The door mounting is often done with the so-called "front fixing fittings" (clip-on system). You will need either a screwdriver or the included Allen key, depending on the cabinet type variant. Additionally, there are often adjustment screws on the back of the door that allow fine-tuning of the height, depth, and lateral position.
I recommend attaching the doors only after the carcass is correctly assembled and aligned, as this greatly facilitates door adjustment.

Are the soft-close hinges at Ikea always pre-installed, or do I have to install them myself with considerable effort? With Metod, you almost certainly already get soft-close hinges pre-installed in the package. When you unpack the hinges, you can usually recognize the dampers by small pistons made of plastic or metal that soften the closing of the hinge.
It’s best to attach the fronts with a narrow Phillips screwdriver and, if necessary, a small Allen key. No special tools are required. Important: The hinges and fasteners often clip into place without needing to be screwed in, which saves work. Just try carefully!
Thank you for the explanations; that already makes the picture clearer. One more point that confuses me a bit: How do I properly adjust the soft-close mechanism? Should I set the damper noticeably stronger or weaker, or is this not adjustable with Metod? And how can I make sure the drawers run smoothly, without being too tight or too loose? Are there any best practices for the optimal adjustment?
Soft-close features on Ikea Metod cabinets are usually pre-set at the factory and cannot be adjusted. In most cases, you don’t need to make any changes, as the mechanism works automatically.
The soft-close hinges dampen the closing motion and cannot be adjusted for stronger or weaker tension; this would require special model hinges.
For drawers, make sure the drawer slides are properly supported and installed parallel. The drawer boxes should move smoothly but without excessive play. If the drawers fit too tightly or too loosely, check the tabs and clamps on the full-extension slides. Sometimes, simply loosening and realigning the mounting brackets on the slides slightly is enough.

How do I properly adjust the soft-close mechanism? This was also an issue for me. Here’s the thing: you can’t directly adjust the soft-close mechanism itself. Instead, you control the door’s behavior by adjusting the hinges (height, depth, and lateral alignment). This sets the door at an angle where the soft-close works optimally.
For drawers, it’s similar—the precise positioning of the drawer slides ensures smooth closing. Don’t hesitate to test several times whether the fronts fit tightly enough; that feeling gives you confidence.
Hey Enkelbo, I can’t wait for you to finish your kitchen! I promise, soft-close is truly a little comfort revolution! 🙂 A tip from me: set up a test with one door and one drawer beforehand so you can start the mechanism and try out the adjustments before assembling all the parts.
This often saves a lot of time and frustration! I remember at first I tightened the adjustment too much – less is sometimes more. And very important: don’t use force on the hinges, the soft-close mechanism doesn’t like that 🙂 Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
