Hello everyone, a few months ago I bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit, and unfortunately I’ve noticed that the painted surface starts to wear off quite quickly and the paint peels in some areas. I’m very interested to hear about your experiences or any tips you might have to prevent the paint on Besta cabinets from coming off so fast. I’m open to advice on maintenance, proper cleaning, or perhaps additional protective measures that can be taken. It’s especially important to me to find out how I can improve the durability of the surface with minimal effort so that the furniture looks like new for longer. Thanks in advance!

Basically, you should avoid cleaning the surfaces with overly harsh cleaners. A slightly damp cloth with mild soapy water is usually sufficient. Additionally, I recommend avoiding strong impacts or scrubbing on the edges, as the material is most vulnerable there. Applying a clear sealant with a suitable furniture wax after cleaning can further enhance protection. It is also important to keep moisture away, as it can potentially damage the finish.

To minimize paint peeling on IKEA Besta, here is a small maintenance tutorial:

1. Cleaning: Use only a damp, soft cloth; avoid abrasive sponges.
2. Cleaning agents: Do not use solvents or harsh cleaners; opt for pH-neutral or mild household cleaners instead.
3. Protection: After cleaning, it is recommended to apply furniture wax or a special sealant for laminated surfaces to add an extra protective layer.
4. Handling: Place heavier objects carefully and avoid using sharp or pointed items directly on the surface.

A common mistake is regularly cleaning the furniture with heavily wet solutions or leaving it in damp rooms without air circulation.

Avoid cleaners containing alcohol or acetone. These will dissolve the paint. Wipe the furniture only with a dry or slightly damp cloth.

Are we really sure that the peeling isn’t caused by the manufacturing process itself? As far as I know, IKEA uses a melamine coating on particleboard for Besta, which is inherently prone to mechanical stress. This would mean that maintenance can help, but the durability remains limited. Does anyone have technical data or guaranteed protective measures that go beyond this?

That could very well be the case; I also suspect it’s related to the coating. That’s precisely why I want to know if there are care methods tailored to this material combination that can provide additional surface protection, or if only gentle handling helps. My goal is not to expect miracles but to significantly improve average durability through proper maintenance.
