Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of installing a reliable child safety lock on my IKEA Besta doors and drawers. My main concerns are finding a solution that holds well, is as invisible or at least discreet as possible, and can be easily removed without leaving marks if needed. Additionally, I want the lock to not interfere with the functionality and to be truly effective for younger children.

Does anyone have practical experience with specific products or techniques? Are there particular models or mounting methods recommended for Besta units? What is the best way to install them, especially on drawers with soft-close mechanisms, which I also have?

I look forward to any tips, including advice on potential pitfalls or important details to keep in mind.

Hello, I simply use these child safety locks that clip inside the doors. For the drawers, there are special locks that you stick to the sides. Simple, effective, and hardly visible.

Hello kenkla61,

for child safety on IKEA Besta units, it is important to adapt the system as closely as possible to the product structure. The doors and drawers are usually made of MDF with a foil coating, which rules out certain types of locks to avoid damage.

The best options are either pressure locks that are installed inside or magnetic locks that work invisibly.

Important: For soft-close drawers, the lock must be installed so that the drawer can still close fully; otherwise, it will lose its effectiveness or the mechanism may be damaged.

A proven approach:
- Find the right mounting point inside the door or drawer, often just above the hinges or on the drawer side panel.
- For magnetic locks, position the magnet so that it does not stick directly under or next to the hinge mechanism to avoid interference.
- Make sure the bonding surfaces are clean and free of grease to ensure durability.

What type of lock do you prefer? Plastic clamps, magnetic systems, or something else?

I would be happy to provide a detailed guide if you let me know your preferred lock type.

Exactly. I would also question whether the safety locks originally intended by IKEA are the best choice, or if third-party products might be superior. Since IKEA often favors modular systems, it’s worth checking whether the original child safety locks designed specifically for Besta doors are truly compatible with soft-close mechanisms or if they are only meant for standard doors.

Does anyone have long-term experience with the different safety locks? Especially regarding durability and ease of use?

For additional information: If special tools are used for installation, it is important to handle them gently because Besta surfaces are delicate. It is advisable to install child safety locks on the inside of doors and drawers, as they are less noticeable there but still provide reliable protection. For drawers with soft-close mechanisms, a combination of magnetic locks and clamping fittings is usually recommended, since purely mechanical fasteners might interfere with the damping function.

It is also important to perform a trial installation before the final assembly to ensure that the drawer closes properly and the safety lock holds securely.

There are several well-established products that have proven effective in the market for child safety devices for IKEA furniture.

- First, there are magnetic locks that are fully installed inside the furniture. These only work together with a special key and are hardly visible. They can be mounted either with adhesive or screws, although screws are not always ideal on IKEA surfaces.
- Second, there are plastic clamp locks that simply clip into the door rebates without any adhesive. They are easy for adults to operate but more difficult for children.
- Important: For drawers, you should check how much space is available for the lock on the inner walls. Often the side profiles are narrow, which can make installation more challenging.

In conclusion: A thorough cleaning before installation and a check after a few days significantly improve durability.
