Good morning everyone, I am currently preparing to service my IKEA Besta drawers and would prefer to do it myself to prevent future wear and tear. My question is: which tools are really necessary to properly and thoroughly maintain them?

It is important to me not to start out with too many or too few tools and to avoid forgetting any special tools. These are common models with metal runners and soft-close mechanisms. Which tools should I definitely have ready to tighten screws, adjust the runners, clean the sliding elements, or possibly lubricate them?

Who has practical experience and can provide a comprehensive and well-structured list with explanations? Thank you!

Hello Tancatarin,

your question is very well formulated, and I’m happy to provide you with a detailed overview. For maintaining the IKEA BESTA drawers, I recommend the following tools:

- Phillips screwdriver (medium to small size), as many screws on the rails typically have this type of head.
- Flathead screwdriver, especially for the small adjustment screws on the damping mechanisms,
- Allen keys (usually 3 or 4 mm), since some IKEA models use hex socket screws,
- Combination pliers or needle-nose pliers for gripping or adjusting small metal parts,
- Retaining pins or small prying tools to remove the drawer fronts for more thorough cleaning,
- A food-safe oil or silicone spray, or one specifically designed for furniture, to lightly lubricate the sliding rails,
- Optional: cleaning cloths and possibly compressed air spray to remove dust from the guide rails.

Oh, and a flashlight is also useful when inspecting dark corners in the guide rails.

Which drawer models do you have exactly (e.g., with BLUM soft-close or other technology)? The specific requirements may vary accordingly.

Best regards!

Thanks for the detailed reply, glamo!

I’m using the BESTA with metal rails plus integrated soft-close functionality, so roughly the BLUM system as you guessed (although IKEA uses its own variant). So far, I have only used a basic screwdriver and some oil, but I’m not sure if I have the right combination of tools to properly check and adjust everything.

Are there any tips on where to be especially careful during disassembly for maintenance to avoid damaging the dampers? Are there any other specialized IKEA tools recommended for this that might be difficult for a layperson to find?

Very good question! I’m happy to support this with a brief step-by-step guide on the tools needed for maintaining BESTA drawers:

1. Screwdrivers:
- A Phillips head (size PH2) can loosen or tighten all the typical screws on the cabinet bodies and rails.
- A small flathead screwdriver is useful for adjusting the dampers or smaller lever mechanisms.

2. Allen keys (hex keys):
- These small hex screws rarely appear but are important for some connections.

3. Lubricant:
- Never use WD-40 or penetrating oil! It’s better to use a silicone-based spray that does not attract dust.

4. Cleaning:
- Microfiber cloths and preferably compressed air to remove dust residues from the guides.

5. Additional tools:
- Removing the front often requires a small plastic tool (pry spatula) so you don’t cause visible damage when releasing clips.

6. Safety rule:
- The dampers must not be removed or forcibly tampered with to avoid damaging their function.

Summary: With a PH2 Phillips screwdriver, a small flathead, Allen keys (3 & 4 mm), microfiber cloth, silicone-based spray, and a plastic pry tool, you’re well equipped for proper maintenance.

In short: Phillips screwdriver PH2, 3mm (1/8 inch) hex key, silicone spray, microfiber cloth. That is sufficient for the maintenance and adjustment of the BESTA drawers.

This provides the basic equipment, but it is worth asking whether all BESTA drawers can be maintained using the same approach. I often see the assumption that the sliding rail systems are uniform. But what about variants with damping technology from other suppliers? Are different tools or even measuring devices advisable in those cases?

Furthermore, is there any experience regarding how often maintenance with this tool set is actually needed to prevent downtime or wear? Or is maintenance generally reactive, carried out only when problems arise?
