Hello everyone, I am looking for effective ways to childproof the Ikea Besta shelving unit. My children are still small and curious, and I want to prevent them from getting their fingers caught in the doors or drawers, as well as stop the unit from tipping over if they climb on it. Additionally, I am looking for tips to keep hazardous items or cables inside the unit out of reach of children. What proven safety measures are available for the Besta system that are stable and long-lasting without completely ruining its appearance? Thanks in advance for your experiences and suggestions!

Hello Pin32, your concern is completely understandable and important. For the Besta shelving unit, I recommend the following safety measures: - Use adhesive pads under the feet to prevent slipping - Install wall anchors or anti-tip brackets for extra stability - Use child safety locks for doors and drawers, such as magnetic locks - Organize cables inside the shelving unit with cable clips and channels to keep cords bundled and out of children’s reach Make sure to firmly attach the anti-tip brackets with appropriate wall anchors. This prevents the shelving unit from becoming dangerous if climbed on. The child lock system is also practical if your little ones like to pull on handles.

Always screw the shelf securely to the wall. Child safety locks for doors are available from Ikea and other suppliers. Otherwise, route cables to the back.

I think it’s really important that the play area, despite safety measures, doesn’t become a playground, otherwise all the effort will be wasted in the long run 😄. Magnetic door closures are very practical because they are invisible and don’t require annoying bolts. And yes, wall mounting is a must – this way, the main control unit in the living room stays intact!

There are also special anti-tip devices for furniture that fit the Besta system. It is important to combine a solid wall anchor with a childproof locking mechanism for the doors or drawers. For these safety devices, I recommend choosing high-quality brands that have already been tested by TÜV. Cheap solutions often do not meet the necessary safety standards and may fail under stress.

Thanks for the overview, laureo! Could you please explain how to best install these magnetic locks? I’m concerned that I might damage the doors or that opening them could become too cumbersome for adults.
