Hello everyone, I am looking for effective and child-safe mechanisms to install on the doors of my IKEA Besta units. The challenge is to have doors that are easy to use but at the same time prevent toddlers from opening them without permission. I am particularly interested in solutions that work without complicated disassembly and preferably remain visually discreet. What types of child locks or safety mechanisms have you tested on Besta doors that have proven effective? Are there differences between hinge doors and flap doors? Additionally, I would like to know if there are recommended products that can be easily attached without damaging the furniture. I look forward to practical experiences and tips!

I know this problem very well because even at our home, the BESTA cabinets were always the focus of my young daughter. It’s really frustrating to have to constantly keep an eye on things. We searched for a long time for a solution that truly works and at the same time doesn’t damage the furniture. Our experience shows that these clamp locks, which you screw inside the door, are quite reliable. However, I also noticed that my child eventually learned how to unlock them. Still, they provide a good initial barrier. You just shouldn’t make the mistake of using a simple adhesive solution – those usually don’t last long and come off quickly. Maybe you have already tried something like that? How old are the children you need this for?

I installed magnetic child safety locks on my BESTA doors. They are hidden on the inside and inaccessible to children. They work well and do not damage the furniture.

As an addition: Magnetic child locks are a reliable choice for IKEA BESTA doors, as they function without visible fasteners and do not alter the exterior appearance of the doors. However, it is important that the magnet is strong enough and the installation is done accurately to prevent misuse. Alternatively, simple rotary locks can be installed inside the doors to prevent opening from the outside. These are often cost-effective and reversible, leaving minimal marks. It should also be noted that adhesive tape-based locks do not hold permanently on smooth surfaces, as children can often remove them. Using multiple safety devices together increases security, especially when toddlers are particularly persistent.

I have two children aged 2 and 4 years, and doors are a frequent target. So far, I’ve only used adhesive locks, but they come off easily. Magnetic systems sound interesting—how complicated is the installation? Do you need to drill holes, or can it be installed completely without drilling?

Magnetic sensors usually require screws for mounting, so drilling is typically necessary. However, there are also models with adhesive strips that can be tested. These are generally less durable.
