Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of installing a reliable child safety lock on my IKEA Besta doors and drawers. My main concerns are finding a solution that holds well, is as invisible or at least discreet as possible, and can be easily removed without leaving marks if needed. Additionally, I want the lock to not interfere with the functionality and to be truly effective for younger children.

Does anyone have practical experience with specific products or techniques? Are there particular models or mounting methods recommended for Besta units? What is the best way to install them, especially on drawers with soft-close mechanisms, which I also have?

I look forward to any tips, including advice on potential pitfalls or important details to keep in mind.

I installed magnetic sensors from a well-known manufacturer. The installation was simple since they only needed to be glued. It is important that the surfaces are dust-free and dry before gluing. Otherwise, there is a risk that the devices will fall off prematurely.

What type of lock do you prefer? Plastic clips, magnetic systems, or something else?

Thank you for the detailed reply, FAZAR. I am actually leaning towards magnetic locks because they are the least visually intrusive and promise that daily use will be less “snagged.” However, combined with soft-close systems, I have concerns about stability and installation. Are there any specific models you would recommend?

I also want to make sure the installation can be done without any damage or residue, as I might want to remove the locks again in a few months.

Any tips on installation techniques would also be appreciated, especially on how to properly prepare the adhesive tape.

Good choice! Magnetic locks are highly recommended for Besta modular units, especially since they require no screws. I suggest cleaning the surfaces thoroughly with alcohol (isopropanol) before installation. This ensures better adhesive bonding and secure attachment even on laminated surfaces.

Tip: After attaching, avoid using the lock for about 24 hours to allow the adhesive to reach full strength. Also, always check that the drawer still closes smoothly, as magnetic locks need some clearance.

Just a small practical tip: Sometimes those tiny magnetic keys can be frustrating to search for frequently. That’s why I attached a magnetic fob to my keyring. It works great and saves a lot of time looking around, especially when you’re in a hurry and have two little troublemakers running around.

Also: Don’t get discouraged if the mounts don’t fit perfectly at first. A bit of adjustment after a few days doesn’t hurt and makes using them much more comfortable.

That is an important point that many underestimate. For magnetic fasteners, it is recommended to use high-quality 3M adhesive tapes (e.g., VHB tape), which provide strong adhesion but can also be removed cleanly if done slowly and with heat, for example using a hairdryer or heat gun to soften the adhesive and protect the surface. This is ideal for sensitive laminated surfaces on Besta.

It is important not to use excessive mechanical force to avoid scratches.

If you like, I can provide a detailed step-by-step guide on how to remove them safely, protecting the surface and avoiding damage to the furniture.
