Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into whether there are any tricks or proven methods to make Ikea Besta furniture cordless. I’m mainly interested in ways to avoid cable clutter, for example through hidden charging stations, wireless power supply, or smart solutions that integrate well with the furniture.

The Besta series is quite popular because of its modular design and good adaptability. I’m curious about your experiences, especially regarding cordless use – either wireless charging for devices or wireless technology applications without visible cables.

Are there any tips for integrating Qi charging pads into surfaces, or system solutions that manage power supply inside the furniture discreetly?

I would appreciate any recommendations for possible products, DIY solutions, or personal experiences that are both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Hello Turansar,

Your question about wireless use of Ikea Besta furniture is very interesting and valid, especially considering that more and more devices today are designed to be wirelessly charged or operated.

In this context, I have studied Qi wireless charging technology extensively, which works well with furniture that has smooth surfaces. I would recommend the following approach:

- Check the thickness and composition of the Besta surface: regular wood or MDF absorbs less energy compared to metal or thick paint layers. It should be verified whether the Qi energy can pass through the furniture panel with sufficient strength.

- Use Qi charging pads specifically designed for furniture integration: some manufacturers offer flat induction chargers that can be mounted almost invisibly under the surface.

- Power supply within the furniture: it is important to plan a suitable, preferably concealed power feed so that the power adapter can be discreetly housed. A common issue is noisy power supplies or inconveniently routed cables.

- Wireless power supply in general is still relatively limited, but with power banks or battery packs inside the furniture piece, a certain degree of independence from the local power grid can also be achieved.

For which devices and use cases exactly do you intend this? That could help to further specify the recommendations.

Hi,

the best solution is to glue Qi pads under the surfaces and hide power strips with USB ports directly inside. This way, you can charge devices neatly without having cables visible on the outside.

Regarding the wireless use of Ikea Besta furniture, integrating Qi wireless charging stations beneath the surface is the most practical solution.

Key points:
- The material thickness of the tabletop or cover surface should not exceed 6mm (0.24 inches), as charging efficiency decreases significantly beyond this.
- It is recommended to install flat Qi chargers with built-in LED indicators to monitor charging status and functionality.
- Power supply can be provided via power strips with USB outlets mounted underneath the furniture. Cable routing should be done inside the unit.

In terms of design, it is important that the furniture itself is non-conductive and not affected by metal fittings or other conductive components where the energy transfer takes place.

A fully wireless power supply, such as using inductive fields for the entire operation, is currently neither economically viable nor easy to implement.

I find the idea of upgrading Ikea Besta furniture for wireless use very interesting and fully support the project. Especially to avoid cable clutter, such a solution is extremely helpful.

I personally once considered integrating Qi charging surfaces into my shelving unit. However, I found that proper placement is challenging, particularly if the furniture is used for other purposes as well and not all areas are occupied all the time.

It would be interesting to learn how others handle this – for example, whether fixed charging spots are worthwhile or if mobile adapters make more sense. Aesthetics should, of course, not be neglected, since with Ikea furniture, distracting elements can quickly become noticeable.

Qi charging stations under tabletops are the preferred solution. Make sure the charger is compatible with your phone and that the tabletop is not too thick.
