Hello everyone, a few months ago I bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit, and unfortunately I’ve noticed that the painted surface starts to wear off quite quickly and the paint peels in some areas. I’m very interested to hear about your experiences or any tips you might have to prevent the paint on Besta cabinets from coming off so fast. I’m open to advice on maintenance, proper cleaning, or perhaps additional protective measures that can be taken. It’s especially important to me to find out how I can improve the durability of the surface with minimal effort so that the furniture looks like new for longer. Thanks in advance!

In summary, I recommend:
- Cleaning with mild, neutral cleaners and soft cloths
- Protecting against moisture and mechanical stress
- Regular application of a plastic-compatible furniture polish
- Immediate removal of dirt and wet dishes

Personally, I have had good experiences with my Besta and have not encountered any peeling issues. Consistent care is essential here.

Those who want to protect the surface should also avoid scratches, for example by attaching felt pads under heavy objects. This reduces abrasion.

It helped me to carefully seal the edges with a thin layer of nail polish or clear varnish. This protects areas that would otherwise wear out more quickly. It is important to apply it gently to avoid creating unpleasant transitions.

Thank you for the many helpful contributions. Tomorrow, I will start with a mild cleaner and polish, and I am also considering applying clear lacquer to the edges. Melamine is not wood, so the care methods differ. If anyone has tips on how to prevent wear from heavy daily use, I would appreciate it!

Quite simple: use it less and more gently, or set up the furniture purely as a decorative element. If it’s used heavily every day, wear is almost unavoidable. But as I said, this is a mass-market product, not a luxury-quality item.
