ᐅ Which sets of screws are best suited for repairs to Ikea BESTA units?

I have recently carried out several repairs on my Ikea Besta furniture, especially at the connection points, where the original screws tend to wear out or fail relatively quickly. My question to the community is: based on your experience, which sets of screws work best for repairing Ikea BESTA, particularly to ensure long-lasting stability and improved load-bearing capacity? I am not just looking for a simple replacement but ideally screws with suitable dimensions and quality that fit the common connection points of BESTA directly. Any advice on materials, thread types, and installation tips is also very welcome.

I used special furniture connector screws with a Torx head in M4 size for my Besta shelves, along with matching hardwood dowels, which hold much better than simple plastic dowels. Both the screws and dowels are from the hardware store, fit well, and have held firmly without any issues for two years.

My conclusion: Instead of buying original screws, it's better to purchase M4 or M5 stainless steel Torx screws, length according to need. When tightening, the material compresses – it’s better to choose screws that are slightly longer.

Thank you all for the helpful contributions! To summarize, it appears that the following are particularly suitable for repairs on Ikea BESTA units:
- metric screws (M4/M5) with Torx head
- screw length depending on the type of connection (20-30 mm (1-1¼ inches) or slightly longer)
- material stainless steel A2 or A4
- if necessary, the use of wooden or hardwood dowels

I would also be interested to know if anyone has experience with alternative screw sets specifically sold as BESTA repair kits, or if it is generally better to rely on standard screws from a hardware store?

I usually don’t recommend specific sets because they tend to be expensive and are not necessarily better than high-quality metric screws from a hardware store. A carefully selected set of suitable M4/M5 stainless steel Torx screws and hardwood dowels usually serves the purpose better and more flexibly.

Since you keep mentioning stainless steel: honestly, how often do you actually have to repair an Ikea BESTA piece of furniture for it to really justify the extra cost? I think people often overestimate the stress involved. Standard steel screws with good galvanization are perfectly adequate for normal use.

That may be true if the use is entirely average and the piece of furniture is not exposed to additional moisture or heavy mechanical stress. However, stainless steel provides greater protection against rust and corrosion, especially if the furniture is expected to last for years.
