bebau42Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes furniture piece and would like to clean it without using any chemical cleaning agents. It is important to me to treat the surface and material gently, avoiding harsh substances that could be harmful to indoor air quality or the environment.
Does anyone know of proven methods or natural remedies that are especially suitable for cleaning Brimnes furniture? How can stains, dust, or light dirt be reliably removed without damaging the finish or surface? Are there general approaches or cleaning concepts recommended when using natural cleaning products?
I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Basically, the IKEA Brimnes is quite resistant to regular household cleaning because its surfaces are coated. For a gentle and chemical-free cleaning, I recommend:
- A soft, damp cloth, preferably microfiber, to remove dust
- Lukewarm water as the base
- For tougher stains, natural agents like diluted vinegar (max. 1:10 with water) work well because they dissolve grease and have antibacterial properties
- Alternatively, a mixture of water and a small amount of lemon juice can also be helpful
It is important to thoroughly wipe the furniture surface with a dry cloth afterward to prevent moisture from penetrating the joints or edges. Avoid abrasive cleaners and alcohol, as they can damage the coating.

Basically, the IKEA Brimnes is quite resistant to typical household cleaning because the surfaces are coated. That is basically correct. To add to this, the Brimnes series primarily features a melamine resin coating, which is sensitive to harsh cleaning agents. Natural alternatives should always be used in mild form, as even vinegar in high concentration can dull the coating over time.
For normal dirt and grime, lukewarm water with a soft sponge or cloth is usually sufficient. Natural soaps, such as pure soap or Aleppo soap, work well when heavily diluted.
Therefore, my recommendation for preparation:
- Cleaning solution made from lukewarm water plus a few drops of pure soap
- Clean with a soft cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners
- Dry with a lint-free cotton cloth
Regular, gentle cleaning prevents heavy soiling and protects the material.
Very important: Do not use harsh cleaning agents! I cleaned the Brimnes with a mixture of water and a little baking soda – it works really well on tough spots! Just sprinkle some baking soda on a damp cloth and gently rub, then wipe off thoroughly. Definitely give this a try, you’ll be impressed!!

Using baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) makes sense chemically because it is mildly alkaline and effectively loosens deposits without damaging the surface. Important: The paste should not be applied too firmly, as mechanical stress can damage the coating.
Summary of the optimal procedure:
- Remove dust with a dry microfiber cloth
- Lightly apply a baking soda-water paste to stains
- Gently rub without strong pressure
- Completely remove remaining paste with a damp cloth
- Dry the surface promptly
This approach is a good compromise between cleaning effectiveness and protecting the material.
