Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Brimnes sideboard and want to properly care for the surface to keep it looking good for a long time. My question is: which cleaning agents and care products are best suited for the Brimnes surface without causing damage or stains? Is it better to use only a dry cloth or a damp cleaning method? I am also interested in whether harsh cleaning products should definitely be avoided and if there are any special tips to consider for this type of material. Thank you in advance!

Hey Glafalko, welcome to the Brimnes owners’ club! 😄 I’ve had my Brimnes furniture for a few years now and have had good experiences cleaning it regularly with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. I would avoid using any strong cleaners completely – the surfaces don’t like them and can quickly look dull or develop stains.

A little tip: Sometimes I add a drop of mild dish soap to the water if there’s more dirt, but make sure to wipe thoroughly with clean water afterward. This way, the surface stays nice and shiny.

Hello Glafalko, I understand your question well, so here is a brief guide on how to care for the IKEA Brimnes surface:

- First: Brimnes furniture is usually made of particleboard or fiberboard with a melamine coating or painted finish. This makes the surface durable but not indestructible.
- You should preferably use a soft cloth, ideally microfiber cloths, as they clean gently and do not cause scratches.
- For cleaning, use plain water or a mild soap solution made from about one drop of dish soap and lukewarm water.
- Never use abrasive cleaners or harsh solvents, as these can damage the surface and leave it dull.
- Avoid scrubbing vigorously; simply wipe gently.

Summary: Gentle cleaners, soft cloths, and no scrubbing – this will keep the surface looking good for a long time.

This is a very important point. Additionally, Brimnes typically has a melamine resin-coated surface. This coating is resistant to regular household cleaners, but solutions containing alcohol, acetone, or ammonia can quickly cause damage.

For cleaning, it is recommended to use a damp cloth with a neutral solution, or if necessary, a mild all-purpose cleaner without harsh ingredients. After cleaning, be sure to dry the surface thoroughly to avoid water spots.

Exactly, otherwise it looks like you had a water fight on the surface!

I always do this right after wiping; it really helps you enjoy the piece of furniture for a long time. A little bit of care definitely pays off with Brimnes.

Thank you for the previous answers; they have been very helpful! I found a small scratch that cannot be removed by simple cleaning. Are there any recommendations on how to hide or treat minor scratches on the surface of Brimnes without resorting to drastic measures?
