Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into the furniture from the Ikea Brimnes series and would like to better understand the properties of the material used in these products. I am especially interested in aspects such as the material composition, how durable it is, any special features regarding the surface, care tips, and how sustainable and environmentally friendly the material is. It would be great if people with experience or more detailed knowledge could share some information to help get a clearer picture. Thanks in advance!

Hello DEOSAN,
I would like to add that Ikea primarily focuses on offering affordable furniture with the Brimnes series, while still ensuring it is suitable for stable everyday use.
Material composition:
- The core material mainly consists of particleboard, coated with melamine or paint.
- This coating provides water and dirt resistance but is not completely impervious to mechanical damage.
Regarding environmental friendliness, Ikea uses certified wood for many products, although this cannot be guaranteed for every Brimnes component.
Care instructions:
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents.
- Avoid leaving moisture on the surface for extended periods.
- Minor scratches can often be concealed with furniture touch-up markers.
If you have specific questions about individual furniture sizes in the series, I am happy to help!

Melamine coatings are especially easy to maintain and offer a certain level of water resistance; however, they are vulnerable to sharp or pointed objects, which can cause chipping.Thank you for the detailed explanation! Could you please clarify how strong the water resistance actually is? For example, if drinks are spilled or damp clothes are placed on the cabinet. Does this quickly cause damage, or does the material warp at all?

Could you perhaps clarify how strong the water resistance actually is? For example, if drinks are spilled or damp laundry is placed on the cabinet. This is an important question. Melamine coatings are water-repellent, meaning small amounts of liquid like spilled drinks can usually be wiped away safely without immediate damage. However, water and moisture can penetrate over time through cut edges or unprotected areas, causing the particleboard or MDF panels to swell and expand.
It is best to avoid placing damp laundry directly on the surface, as prolonged moisture exposure can cause the material to warp or cause small bubbles or flaking in the coating. Likewise, standing water or wet sponges should not be left on the surface for extended periods.
Overall, the material is water-repellent for normal use but does not offer true waterproof protection.
