Hello everyone,

I have noticed that some of the drawer fronts on my IKEA Malm dressers are slightly warped. This not only looks unattractive but also prevents the fronts from closing properly.

My question to the community is: How do you replace warped Malm drawer fronts?

I want to proceed as professionally as possible without damaging the entire drawer mechanism. Are there any special tools I should be aware of, or tricks that make the removal process especially gentle?

Additionally, I am interested to know whether it is necessary to use new IKEA original parts when replacing the fronts, or if there are compatible alternatives.

Thanks in advance for your tips!

The brackets are usually made of plastic and can become brittle over time. Therefore:

- Work slowly and carefully.
- Use a plastic spatula or screwdriver, not metal tools that are too sharp, to avoid scratches.
- Maintain a straight pulling direction, as clips are often pressed sideways instead of pulled.

If a bracket breaks, you can order replacement parts from IKEA, sometimes also through third parties. It is worth knowing exactly which front and production year you have before removing anything.

In short: The drawer fronts are simply screwed on or clipped in. To remove, release the clips or unscrew the screws. Attach the new front, making sure it is positioned precisely, otherwise it won’t close properly.

Thank you for your quick and helpful responses so far!

Regarding screws: Apparently, some models also have small metal clips. Does anyone know exactly how to remove them? Are simple screwdrivers sufficient, or do I need special tools?

Also, if the new front is slightly different in size (e.g., 1-2 mm larger (0.04-0.08 inches)), could that cause problems during installation?

For metal clips, a small screwdriver is usually enough. In most cases, you can carefully push them away or loosen them.

Regarding measurements: a difference of 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 inches) can cause edge fitting problems. Accurate fitting is important; otherwise, proper closing may not be possible.

One could say: The fit of these fronts is crucial – almost like a favorite hat, which shouldn’t be too small or too large 😉.

That’s why it’s better to use the original front or very precise measurements, otherwise you might get frustrated when closing it later.

And regarding the metal clips: Often, small flat-nose pliers can help if the screwdriver feels a bit unstable.

To revisit the topic of precise installation: If the front panel is even slightly larger, there is a risk that it will rub against side panels or other fronts. Over time, this can cause material wear or even damage the mechanisms.

Before purchasing a replacement front, I always recommend measuring the old front exactly (height, width, thickness). The position of the drill holes is also crucial, as some IKEA systems have small variations here.

Some suppliers also offer spare parts matched to the year of manufacture or the serial number. If you like, you can photograph the inside of your drawer (without the front, of course) and include measurements – then we might be able to help more precisely.
