So far, I only have basic Phillips screwdrivers and a small standard screwdriver, but I’m not sure if these are really the best tools for the screws provided.
I would also appreciate advice on handle comfort, the fit of the screwdriver tips, and whether a cordless drill/driver is helpful or rather a hindrance.
Thank you very much for your recommendations!

Which screwdrivers are best suited for assembling the HEMNES, especially for the typical fasteners and screw heads that IKEA uses?Hello! For assembling the HEMNES, I generally recommend screwdrivers with Phillips (PH2) and flathead tips. IKEA often uses Euro-flat-head screws for the wooden parts and Phillips screws for the metal connectors.
1. Phillips (PH2): Ideal for most screws in the package. Make sure the tip fits well to avoid slipping out or damaging the screw heads.
2. Flathead: Needed less often but sometimes required for securing dowels.
3. Handle comfort: A rubberized handle with an ergonomic shape makes longer screwing easier.
4. Cordless screwdriver: Recommended if you manage the torque carefully to prevent over-tightening. A screwdriver bit with a depth stop can help.
In summary: A PH2 screwdriver with an ergonomic handle plus a suitable flathead screwdriver covers almost everything. Good luck!

A PH2 screwdriver with an ergonomic handle plus a matching flathead screwdriver covers almost everything.Exactly! And honestly, who wants to mess around with a tiny mini Phillips screwdriver on such a large cabinet? 😄 Ergonomics and good handles are a must, otherwise what should take 30 minutes quickly turns into 2 hours.
A set with multiple bits and a small cordless drill makes the job easier, but beware: avoid using high speed, or you risk stripping the screws. It’s better to work calmly and with care!

AUSTINREN13 Sep 2021 09:14The screws used in IKEA HEMNES furniture are mostly standardized Phillips head screws of size PH2. A suitable screwdriver with a high-quality tip prevents rounding off the screw heads.
Cordless drills are useful, provided the torque setting is correctly adjusted to avoid over-tightening or damaging the wood. For assembly, I recommend:
- PH2 screwdriver with an ergonomic handle
- Screwdriver with a magnetic tip for easier handling
- Cordless drill with torque control (max. 3-4 Nm)
This selection minimizes time spent and damage to the materials.
