Hello everyone,

I am planning to professionally install an IKEA Metod range hood in my new kitchen. I have already read quite a bit, but I want to make sure I correctly follow all important steps and technical requirements.

Specifically, I am interested in the following points: How do I securely mount the hood in the correct position, what conditions need to be met for ducted (vented) or recirculating operation, and how do I properly connect the electrical wiring according to standards? Additionally, the existing cabinet is designed for 60 cm (24 inches), and I am not sure how to perfectly align and secure the hood there without causing vibrations or uneven airflow.

I am also curious about which materials or fasteners IKEA recommends for the Metod series, and whether I should install additional sealing to ensure efficient ventilation. If anyone has tips on the ideal positioning related to the cooktop distance and general safety advice, I would appreciate that as well.

I look forward to your well-informed experience and recommendations to ensure a flawless installation.

Hello gujogu,

Your concern is well thought out, and there are indeed some important points to consider when installing the IKEA Metod range hood:

- The hood should be installed approximately 65–75 cm (26–30 inches) above the cooktop, depending on whether it is a gas or electric cooktop (gas generally requires more clearance).
- The mounting is usually done directly on the designated attachment points inside the wall cabinet supplied with the unit. Be sure to use the original screws and brackets, as they are optimized for the weight and noise insulation.
- For ducted operation, a properly sealed connection to the ventilation duct is necessary. Using a flexible metal or aluminum hose is advisable, but it should not be too long to avoid restricting airflow.
- Electrically, if you are unsure, the connection should be carried out by a professional. The hood is typically installed via a fixed wiring or a power outlet. Pay attention to appropriate IP protection ratings and compliance with relevant electrical standards.

Seals on the cabinet or duct should be heat-resistant and must not be too tight to prevent air stagnation. I also recommend testing the hood’s function before final installation.

If you provide more detailed information about your kitchen, I’d be happy to assist you with the planning.

Hello gujogu,

the installation basically proceeds as follows:
- Mount the upper cabinet
- Attach the range hood with the mounted brackets
- Connect and seal the exhaust duct
- Connect the electrical wiring (preferably by a professional)

The distance to the cooktop should be between 65 and 75 cm (26 and 30 inches).

Hello gujogu,

to properly install the IKEA Metod range hood, it is essential to plan the installation process systematically and follow it carefully. I will explain the most important steps in detail:

1. Preparation for installation:
- First, check the wall cabinet where the hood will be mounted. For IKEA Metod, the cabinet is usually 60 cm (24 inches) wide and must be stable enough. The back panel should be load-bearing and firmly screwed in place.

2. Positioning the hood:
- As mentioned, the distance to the cooktop is important (65-75 cm / 26-30 inches). The hood is usually installed directly under the wall cabinet, and IKEA provides precise measurements in the installation manual. Mark the drill holes accurately to ensure a perpendicular installation.

3. Fastening:
- Use the IKEA-specific mounting kits, which are designed for the material composition of the Metod cabinet back panels. Otherwise, anchors and screws suitable for drywall (plasterboard) or wood can be used, depending on the wall material.
- Make sure to tighten all screws firmly but not excessively to avoid damaging the material.

4. Exhaust system:
- For ducted operation, connect the hood to a duct with a diameter of 125 mm (5 inches). The duct should be as straight and short as possible to minimize airflow resistance.
- Sealing the duct connections is mandatory to prevent exhaust air leakage.

5. Electrical connections:
- Wiring must comply with VDE standards and be properly fused. It is best to have the electrical work done by a certified electrician. Usually, there is a conductor with a protective earth, and the hood is hardwired or connected accordingly.

In my experience, common errors include oversized or excessively long exhaust ducts, loose screws, and incorrect mounting height.

Regarding your question about materials: in addition to the IKEA mounting kits, I like to use silicone tape for airtightness and metal clamps for duct connections, which ensures a durable installation without issues.

Could you show us how your kitchen cabinet is set up? Is the existing cabinet space sufficient for the hood?

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Regarding Lance: The cabinet is actually the standard Metod 60 cm (24 inch) width, about 37 cm (15 inch) deep, with a thin particleboard back panel. I’m unsure whether I should use this back panel as the mounting base or if there is a wall behind the back panel where I can also secure it. Depending on the wall material, this could increase stability.

Also, a question for everyone: IKEA states that the hood should be installed using a special mounting bracket that is apparently fastened through the cabinet. Are there any best practices for drilling through, especially to avoid damaging or breaking the back panel? I want to prevent the back panel from cracking and losing stability.

What about alignment if the kitchen is installed at an angle against a wall? Can the brackets still be adjusted, or does the cabinet back panel need to be perfectly plumb?

Thanks for any additional tips!

That’s a good point. I always recommend pre-drilling with a small drill bit (about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches)) when working with thin back panels, then gradually enlarging the hole with the larger drill bit. It also helps to place a thin piece of wood or a small board behind the panel before drilling through. This often prevents splintering or tearing out.

Regarding alignment, I can say that the brackets are usually rigid, especially with Metod. If your wall is uneven, you should try to position and level the cabinet as accurately as possible beforehand. Otherwise, the hood won’t sit flush in the end, which looks untidy.

If there is no solid substrate behind the cabinet’s back panel, it might be useful to attach an additional batten to reinforce the mounting on the wall.
