Hello everyone,
I recently assembled a Besta sideboard from Ikea at home, and unfortunately the doors have warped. This shows because the doors no longer close flush and one side slightly bows outward, which not only looks untidy but also affects their function.
My question is: What is the best way to handle warped Ikea Besta doors? Are there proven methods to correct or repair the doors, or should I request replacement parts instead? I would appreciate tips for identifying the cause as well as step-by-step approaches, ideally including advice on how to properly remove and readjust the door if that helps.
I am also interested in any long-term preventive measures to avoid the door warping again, for example regarding moisture or installation errors.
Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello reuvenbe,
First of all, warped Ikea Besta doors are unfortunately not an uncommon issue, as these furniture pieces are usually made of MDF or particleboard, which can react to humidity and temperature changes. The frame often warps if the doors are hung incorrectly or the screws are not properly tightened.
Here is a systematic approach you can follow:
- Start by removing the doors. To do this, press the small levers on the hinges or loosen the thumbscrews. Ikea fittings are generally designed to allow this easily.
- Check the hinges to ensure they are firmly attached, as loose hinges can worsen warping.
- Measure the gap between the door edges and the cabinet frame precisely – often, adjustments to the hinge screws can compensate quite a bit.
If that is not enough:
- Try gently applying even pressure to reshape the door. Sometimes laying it flat on an even surface and weighting it down helps to correct the distortion.
- Make sure the room’s humidity level does not fluctuate excessively. Ideally, it should be around 40–60%. Large fluctuations can cause MDF doors to swell or shrink.
- If none of these measures help, consider replacing the door, as MDF panels can warp permanently.
One important question for you is: How old is the furniture and what are the storage conditions? For example, is it placed directly against a wall with high humidity?
Based on your answer, we can better identify the causes. It would also be helpful to know whether these are standard Besta doors or the high-gloss variant, as they react differently to moisture.
I also recommend regularly checking the doors after adjustment and fine-tuning the hinges if necessary.
Best regards!

Check the hinges to ensure they are firmly attached, as loose hinges can worsen warping. This is a very important point. Often, the cause of warped doors is not only the material but also that the fastening screws loosen over time.
Additionally, I recommend carefully tightening the hinges with a cordless screwdriver without over-tightening them, while checking if the doors are hung at the correct points.
Another helpful measure is adjusting the hinges at the three adjustment points, which Ikea usually provides: height, depth, and lateral alignment. This can often significantly improve the appearance of warped doors, at least visually.
If the door continues to warp visibly despite all these measures, it would be unfortunate to waste time – then you should consider making a claim or ordering a replacement.
Hello reuvenbe,
I wanted to share a few additional tips on how to effectively manage the issue of warped Besta doors in the long term.
1. Once properly adjusted, the doors shouldn’t wobble anymore. Make sure to use the adjustment screws gradually and carefully test each change.
2. Since Besta cabinets are often placed in kitchens or living rooms, the indoor climate is crucial. Try to keep the surrounding air as consistently dry as possible to prevent the panels from swelling and shrinking.
3. For cleaning the doors, I recommend using mild, not overly damp cloths. Excessive moisture can also cause permanent damage to the panels.
4. If you feel the door is severely warped, you can try placing it overnight with some weight on a flat, hard surface, as kulau already mentioned.
I hope this helps. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!
