Hello everyone,

I recently ordered and installed the IKEA Platsa fronts made of plastic. Since I place great importance on long-lasting care and want to avoid the surfaces becoming dull or discolored, I’m asking here for your experiences and recommendations on the proper cleaning and maintenance of these plastic fronts.

I’m especially interested in:
- Which cleaning products are suitable or should be avoided?
- Are there specific care techniques or products that protect the surface?
- What about microfiber cloths or other tools to prevent scratches?

I assume that aggressive cleaners could damage the surface, but I’m unsure whether mild all-purpose cleaners are really optimal or if there are better alternatives. Also, I would like to know if you have achieved good long-term results with certain care products.

Thanks for your help!

Simply use a soft, damp cloth. Cleaning agents: mild dish soap with water. Avoid abrasive or alcohol-based cleaners.

Microfiber cloths are acceptable, but only if soft and clean. Do not use scouring powders.

Hello Leoan,

your question is very good because the plastic fronts of PLATSA do require special care to stay looking nice for a long time. I recommend:

- Use lukewarm water with a little mild dish soap that does not harm the plastic surface.
- Avoid aggressive cleaners, especially those based on solvents or alcohol, as they can fade the surface or make it more prone to scratches.
- Microfiber cloths are ideal because they clean gently and pick up dirt well. But make sure the cloth is really clean, otherwise small scratches can appear quickly.
- Avoid rough sponges or abrasive cleaners, as these can dull the plastic.

Additionally, after cleaning, you can apply a special plastic care product or a mild conditioner that lightly protects the surface and keeps the material flexible. Since Ikea doesn’t provide specific recommendations, it’s best to try this on a small, inconspicuous area first.

If you have fingerprints on the fronts, microfiber cloths and a slightly damp cloth usually work wonders.

I hope this helps!

An interesting approach that some overlook: I think with IKEA furniture, there’s often a distinction made between cheap and low-maintenance. Of course, harsh cleaners can quickly cause damage, but the question is whether these highly specialized products are even necessary.

In my opinion, most of us live with “normal” use. A clean, soft cloth and pH-neutral dish soap are perfectly sufficient. Anyone who feels the need to polish their cabinet with plastic care products is more likely to end up with unattractive residues or sticky surfaces.

“Natural” wear shows character, whether you like it or not. Even PLATSA isn’t a designer piece made of glass or wood where surface protection is a high priority. Still, I think it’s good to avoid harsh chemicals.

Regarding microfiber cloths: sure, they are fine, but if you’re not careful—using a dirty cloth or coarser fibers—you can still get slight scratches. So just avoid cheap steel wool or rough sponges, and the surface will stay in better condition.
