Hello everyone,

I have a large Ikea Platsa shelving unit at home and am currently facing the challenge of cleaning it effectively from dust. The furniture consists of melamine-coated surfaces and combines open shelves with closed compartments. Since dust tends to accumulate especially in corners and edges, I’m wondering which methods and cleaning products are best suited to both protect the surfaces and thoroughly remove dust – without risking scratches or damage.

I’m particularly interested in whether there are specific tools (e.g., microfiber cloths, special dusters, or cleaning devices) that have proven to be effective for the different materials used in the Platsa system.

Does anyone have experience cleaning Ikea Platsa furniture or can offer tips on how to remove dust efficiently while being gentle on the materials?

I appreciate any detailed responses!

Hey plogau,

I really like your question because dust can be really annoying, especially with modular furniture like Platsa, which often has a lot of dust-collecting surfaces! 😅

What helps me is to first use a good, dry microfiber cloth for dusting, which already catches a lot. If the dust is more stubborn, just slightly dampen the cloth—but use only a small amount of water to avoid damaging the melamine surface.

For edges and corners, I like to use a small, soft brush or a narrow duster. This works well for hard-to-reach spots.

And very important: clean regularly! The more often you do it, the easier it is to remove.

That’s it from me for now😉

Hello plogau,

to effectively remove dust from your Ikea Platsa furniture with melamine surfaces, I would like to explain some technical details and recommended cleaning steps:

- First, it is important to loosen the dust particles mechanically. Microfiber cloths, as mentioned by KAUDRA62, are ideal because their fiber structure attracts and holds dust better.
- Ideally, use a slightly damp cloth moistened with distilled water to avoid lime stains.
- Avoid aggressive cleaning agents, as they can damage the melamine coating.
- For hard-to-reach areas, such as corners in open shelves, a soft detailing brush or a low-powered dust blower (e.g., compressed air spray) works well to remove dust particles from narrow gaps without scratching the surface.

I also wonder whether you clean the Platsa only from the outside or if you also clean the inside of the closed compartments and doors? This somewhat affects the effort involved.

In general, I recommend regular cleaning every 1–2 weeks to prevent buildup. A more intensive damp cleaning can then be done once a month.

Let me know exactly how your furniture is assembled, and I can give you more specific tips.

Hello,

for Platsa: wipe dust off with a dry microfiber cloth, and for stubborn stains, wipe again with a slightly damp cloth. Do not use any harsh cleaning agents.

This is usually sufficient to prevent damage.

I’m happy to add a brief cleaning guide for Ikea Platsa:

1. Preparation: Remove all loose items and, if necessary, gently knock out any thicker dust layers beforehand.
2. Dusting: Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the surfaces. The fiber structure ensures effective dust retention.
3. Detailed cleaning: Use a small brush or a soft toothbrush for edges and corners to ensure nothing sticks.
4. Damp cleaning: For light dirt, a damp cloth with a neutral cleaning agent (pH-neutral, e.g., a maintenance cleaner without alcohol or solvents) is sufficient.

Common mistakes:
- Using abrasive cleaners or solvent-based cleaners often causes dulling or scratches.
- Excessively wet cloths can damage the edges and cause trapped moisture.

Finally, you can wipe again with a dry cloth to remove any remaining moisture.

Please feel free to ask if you want to know more about suitable cleaning products.

Thanks for the hint, Palenar. Yes, I currently also clean the inside surfaces of the closed compartments because dust sometimes accumulates there, even when the doors are closed. The unit consists of several modules combined with doors and open shelves.

I’m unsure whether I should also wipe the inside surfaces with a damp cloth, especially considering the door seals and hardware. Are there any special precautions for that?

Also, I would like to know if frequent dusting with a brush or cloth might cause scratches on melamine surfaces if one is not careful.
