I recently purchased an Ikea Platsa system and am quite satisfied with its flexibility and design. However, I am concerned about the surface, as I suspect it might be relatively prone to scratches. My question is: Are there effective ways to protect the Ikea Platsa surface from scratches that are both practical for everyday use and visually acceptable? I am thinking of special protective films, coatings, or other types of surface protection that other users might have already tried. It’s important to me that the protection is not too noticeable and is easy to clean. I look forward to hearing about your experiences and tips!

Hello noah63, your topic is quite relevant since Ikea Platsa furniture is usually made of MDF boards with a decorative foil, which makes it prone to scratches. To help you find a protective solution that is both subtle and practical, here is an overview of possible options:

- Protective films: There are transparent PVC or polyurethane films designed specifically for surface protection. You can cut these precisely to size and apply them to the surfaces. Make sure the film itself is scratch-resistant and does not develop a yellowish tint.
- Furniture wax or special sealants: Wax does not penetrate deeply but can mask minor scratches and make the surface more resistant. Please be sure to use products that do not leave any residues.
- Clear lacquer: A thin layer of water-based lacquer could provide strong protection, although it may slightly alter the appearance. It is important to choose the right type of lacquer that is compatible with the surface.

Could you please provide more details about how heavily the furniture will be used? For example, is it placed in a child’s room or a work area? In case of heavy use, I would recommend a more durable sealant.

I think noah63’s question is very good because this piece of furniture is often underestimated in terms of its susceptibility to scratches. It can be really frustrating when the beautiful surface shows damage after a short time. I personally didn’t do anything with my Platsa at first, but after a few weeks I noticed small scratches and was quite disappointed.

I fully understand that this matters a lot—especially if you care about appearance and want the furniture to look good for as long as possible. That’s why I would also like to know if there are products that not only protect but also somehow care for the surface. Maybe everyday measures like removing sharp objects or using special mats inside could help? Even if these don’t protect the furniture externally, they might reduce further fraying.

Looking forward to hearing more experiences.

I have always found clear furniture protection films to work best. They can be easily cut to size and applied. This way, surfaces are protected against scratches. It is important that the film itself is scratch-resistant and does not cause any unpleasant discoloration.

Sealing with clear varnish is helpful. I recommend applying 2-3 coats. This makes the surface more resistant to scratches.

In my opinion, a more durable sealant is advisable for heavy use.

I completely agree. Especially for furniture that is used daily or in households with children, protection is definitely sensible. However, I would also make sure that the materials remain breathable to prevent moisture buildup.
