ᐅ How can IKEA Platsa furniture be cleaned properly without causing damage?

sinfiHello everyone,
I recently bought some IKEA Platsa furniture and want to clean it properly without damaging the surfaces or edges. The Platsa series mainly consists of melamine-coated particleboard, and I’m not sure which cleaning products and methods are suitable, especially since different parts like doors, carcasses, and shelves experience varying levels of wear.
Specifically, I’m interested in:
- Which cleaning agents (e.g., mild dish soap, special furniture cleaners, alcohol, etc.) are recommended or should be avoided?
- What is the best approach for stubborn stains, such as those from markers, red wine, or grease, on the surfaces?
- Are there any materials or finishes on Platsa furniture that are particularly sensitive and require special care?
I want to avoid damage like discoloration, surface swelling, or scratches and look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello sinfi,
your question is very well formulated and important for everyone who wants to keep their Platsa furniture looking good in the long term. Generally, I recommend using mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents for boards with melamine coating. A solvent-free, mild dish soap in lukewarm water works well for daily cleaning.
For stubborn stains:
- First try a soft cloth with mild soapy water.
- For tougher dirt, isopropyl alcohol (diluted, e.g., 70%) can be used carefully, but avoid rubbing too hard.
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or rough sponges, as they can scratch the surface.
The edges of Platsa furniture are often particularly vulnerable because they are usually made of plastic or another type of coating. Special care is needed here to prevent swelling or fading of the edges. I recommend cleaning these areas with a slightly damp cloth and be sure to wipe dry afterwards.

I’d like to add to Gino’s comments.
Many people don’t realize that while the melamine surface is resistant to moisture, it is not indestructible. Standing water over a long period can cause the chipboard to swell. That’s why it’s best to wipe down the surface with a dry microfiber cloth as soon as possible after cleaning.
For stains like red wine or grease:
- Fresh stains respond best to a lightly damp cloth; timely action is crucial.
- For dried stains, you can use diluted glass cleaner, but always test it first on an inconspicuous area.
In general, I strongly advise against using harsh cleaners containing ammonia or bleach, as they can cause discoloration.
If you like, I can also recommend a simple homemade mixture that works well on very delicate surfaces.

Are there any specific cleaning products that IKEA itself recommends for Platsa or similar melamine furniture? Also, I’m curious whether these cleaning instructions differ when Platsa is combined with glass doors.
One more thing: What type of cloth material would you prefer? I’ve often read that microfiber cloths are ideal—but are there differences in quality or handling that one should consider?
For cleaning Platsa furniture:
- Use a microfiber cloth, never abrasive sponges.
- Mix mild dish soap with water.
- Wipe with a damp cloth, then dry by rubbing.
You can also clean glass doors with glass cleaner, but do not spray it directly on the wood.
No more is needed, no harsh chemicals.

I love my Platsa furniture and am happy to share my tip! Cleaning is really easy with a mild dish soap. The key is to have fun and avoid applying too much pressure.
If something doesn’t come off right away, don’t worry! I once carefully removed a marker stain using nail polish remover, but only with a cotton swab and dried it immediately afterward – it worked great without causing any damage!
Give it a try and don’t get discouraged. Your furniture will thank you with a shiny finish! 🙂
