EmilegauHello everyone,
I recently purchased the Ikea Platsa wardrobe system and am very pleased with the appearance of the wood surfaces. However, since I want the surfaces to stay looking nice for as long as possible and to be resistant to scratches, stains, or moisture, I’m wondering: Are there any specific tips for effectively protecting the wood surfaces of the Ikea PLATSA furniture?
I’m particularly interested in which types of surface treatments or care products are recommended, whether home remedies are truly suitable or might do more harm, and how to avoid common everyday risks that could damage the wood surfaces.
Does anyone have practical experience or recommendations for proper care and protection to keep the furniture in good condition over time? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For the care and protection of Ikea PLATSA wood surfaces, it is important to know that these are usually veneered chipboard panels, typically melamine-coated or laminated, rather than solid wood. These surfaces are durable but not fully resistant to moisture, scratches, or heat.
The following tips are recommended:
- Avoid direct contact with water and wipe off any spills immediately
- Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive products, as they can damage the surface
- Use special furniture polish or care products designed for melamine-coated surfaces, as these do not create layers that may cause discoloration or sticky residues
- Use protective mats when writing or working with sharp objects
- Do not place heat sources such as hot pots, plates, or coffee machines directly on the surface
Home remedies like vinegar or lemon juice are not advised, as they may chemically damage the surface. The melamine or laminated coating is relatively resistant to mechanical wear, but following these precautions will significantly extend its lifespan.

To provide a more detailed overview of protective measures, here is a brief guide for the care of wood surfaces on PLATSA:
1. Cleaning:
- Wipe the surfaces with a well-wrung, damp cloth whenever possible.
- Avoid harsh cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleach, or abrasive cleaners.
- For occasional deeper cleaning, a mild dish detergent diluted in water is suitable.
2. Protection Against Moisture:
- Always remove liquids immediately, as the core board may swell if exposed to moisture for extended periods.
- Use felt pads under decorative items; this also helps prevent scratches.
3. Preventing Scratches:
- Use protective pads when working with sharp or heavy objects.
4. Care Products:
- Wax-based furniture polishes are not recommended, as they can leave residues.
- Special cleaners designed for coated wood surfaces or brief cleaning with a specially treated microfiber cloth make maintenance easier.
In summary, it is especially important to be cautious with moisture and mechanical stress, as PLATSA is not made of solid wood.

I love my PLATSA system and have actually developed a little ritual to protect the surfaces! 😊
I always use coasters for anything that might be wet or hot. I’ve also got special cleaning cloths that are gentle—not too wet, not too dry.
And very important: when cleaning, I only use mild cleaning agents to keep the surface looking bright and beautiful. This way, the wood stays in great condition for a long time! You can do it too! 🙂

As previously explained, the PLATSA surfaces are generally coated with melamine, which provides a low-maintenance and durable finish. However, the usual precautions should be observed:
- Remove water and moisture immediately, as the particle board underneath can swell
- Do not use abrasive cleaning agents, as they may damage the coating
- Dents or scratches cannot be fully repaired because the veneer is thin
If necessary, vinyl or wood protective mats can be used for added protection. Permanent sealants or oils are not recommended on melamine-coated PLATSA surfaces, as they adhere poorly and may leave unsightly residues.
