Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some PLATSA cabinets from IKEA, and I want to carefully maintain their wood surfaces to ensure a long-lasting appearance and durability. Since I understand that IKEA panels often have special coatings or surface sealants, I’m wondering which cleaning products and methods are recommended to gently clean the wood finish of the PLATSA series and protect it from moisture or scratches.

Specifically, I am interested in:
- Which cleaning agents are suitable without damaging the surface?
- Are there any products I should avoid?
- How often should the surfaces be treated or maintained?
- Are there any special tips for protecting against water stains or scratches?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Hi reo40,

First of all, it’s great that you’re thinking about maintenance! The PLATSA series usually has a melamine resin coating, which makes it quite durable. However, you should avoid using harsh cleaners, as they can dull the surface or even cause small scratches.

My advice: use a soft cloth, preferably microfiber, and lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap. Gently wipe without scrubbing. If you want something for maintenance, furniture care oil or a special care wax for sealed surfaces works very well — it gives the wood a nice shine and provides extra protection.

Extra tip: remove stains immediately, ideally with a slightly damp cloth, because dried residues are much harder to remove later.

Do not use vinegar or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can damage the surface! 😊

Hello,

in addition to vin_leos’ advice, I would like to summarize the most important care instructions in a structured way:

- Cleaning: Avoid aggressive cleaners and solvents. Use a lightly dampened soft cloth with neutral soap.
- Protection: As PLATSA usually has a melamine coating, the surface is scratch- and moisture-resistant but not indestructible.
- Prevention: Do not place hot or wet items directly on the surface without a protective layer.
- Aftercare: Additional treatment with furniture wax is generally possible, but it only moderately improves protection and is not mandatory.
- Frequency: Regular cleaning is sufficient. Additional treatment can be done once or twice a year.

I also recommend addressing stains immediately and avoiding abrasive cleaners that can cause micro-scratches.

I completely agree! 😊

I’ve had my PLATSA shelves for a year now and clean them the same way. A small sponge works well for stubborn stains too—but please don’t scrub too hard.

One more thing about scratches: I use felt pads for plants and other items to protect the surface. It worked great, and the surface looks like new.

So: gentle care, act quickly on stains, and use pads—then you’ll enjoy it for a long time!

Avoid aggressive cleaners.

Use only mild soap and a soft cloth.

Wipe wet areas dry immediately.

Prevent scratches by using coasters and handling with care.
