Hello everyone,

I am looking for low-maintenance options within the Ikea PAX wardrobe system. Specifically, I am interested in which of the many different doors and finishes are easy to clean in everyday use and are as resistant as possible to scratches, stains, or moisture.

I have read that, for example, lacquered fronts can scratch easily, and wood-like surfaces might require different care. It would also be helpful to know if there are combinations with glass or mirror fronts that can be kept clean without much effort.

The goal is a low-maintenance wardrobe that is both visually appealing and practical for daily use. Who has experience with the various PAX options and can share advice on materials and cleaning? Thanks in advance!

Regarding the ease of maintenance for the Ikea PAX options, it can be noted that matte lacquered fronts are less prone to fingerprints and scratches compared to high-gloss lacquered fronts.

- Foil-covered fronts (e.g., white, gray) are durable and relatively resistant to scratches, but harsh cleaning agents should be avoided.
- Real wood veneer and solid wood fronts require regular care with special oils or waxes, making them less low-maintenance.
- Glass fronts (including mirrors) are easy to wipe clean but quickly show dust and fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning.

In summary, matte and foil-covered fronts are the most suitable for everyday use when it comes to ease of maintenance.

That’s true, and I would like to add that both the cleaning method and the cleaning agents used are crucial. For matte surfaces, for example, it is advisable to use a soft cloth with mild dish soap and to avoid aggressive scrubbing, as this could damage the surface.

For high-gloss fronts, microfiber cloths help prevent streaks. Glass and mirror variants work best with special glass cleaners that also avoid streak formation.

If you have sensitive surfaces, always test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first. With the right care, any surface can be kept in good condition, but the requirements vary.

My experience: melamine-coated fronts are the easiest to maintain. Simply wipe them clean, no special cleaners needed. High-gloss lacquer is not a good option at all, as it quickly shows wear if cleaned frequently.

Could you please explain this in more detail? In my view, high-gloss lacquer actually looks particularly attractive and is also water-repellent. Wouldn’t that actually make cleaning easier?

I’m asking because I’m wondering whether the supposed maintenance effort with high-gloss finishes is really an issue or just a subjective perception.

Glossy surfaces quickly show every fingerprint and small scratches, which are hardly noticeable on matte or laminated materials.

This often means cleaning requires a lot of effort.

It doesn’t look like new, but quickly appears scratched and dirty.
