Hello everyone,
I have a small issue with one of my IKEA Malm furniture pieces. It concerns the painted surfaces, specifically the dresser with a white painted finish. Unfortunately, after some use, scratches appeared quite quickly, which bother me a lot – mainly because they are very noticeable and affect the smooth, glossy finish. My question is: What are the best methods or products to conceal these scratches as unobtrusively as possible?
I have thought about repainting them, but I’m unsure whether this is easy and effective without the color looking different or the surface becoming blotchy.
Does anyone have practical tips, special touch-up pens, waxes, or other tricks to make these paint scratches on IKEA Malm furniture as invisible as possible? Are there alternative methods that don’t require complete repainting? I would like to preserve the original appearance as much as possible.
I look forward to your experiences and advice!
Thanks in advance.

I completely understand how frustrating those scratches on the painted surfaces can be. This happens quite often with the Malm furniture because the paint isn’t always very durable.
Repainting alone is really tricky since you have to match the original color very precisely. I once tried a special furniture repair kit that included paint pens and small wax fillers. The result was pretty good, especially for smaller scratches. It’s important to clean the area thoroughly beforehand and lightly sand it; otherwise, the paint won’t stick well or will look uneven in the end.
Maybe that could be a first option for you before getting into something more complicated.
I’d be interested to hear how it works out for you! 🙂

It’s great that you brought up this topic here! :-) I really like the Malm series, but the fact that the finish is so prone to scratches can be quite annoying sometimes.
I once tried using small wax sticks that are actually meant for wooden furniture – they worked really well for my smaller scratches! They basically fill in the scratch, making it much less noticeable. I was too lazy to do a full repaint, but maybe you want to give something like that a try?
And of course, if the damage is bigger, the only option is repainting or even sanding and repainting. But with patience, that works too!
Keep us updated!!! 🙂

Hi SAUKO,
Scratches on Malm furniture are quite common – a classic trick is to use wood or furniture wax.
You apply it, gently polish it in, and voilà: the scratches magically disappear or become much less noticeable. 😊
For deeper gouges, I would cautiously use touch-up markers, but always apply thin layers patiently. Otherwise, it can look uneven quickly.
Good luck, and don’t get discouraged, we’ll fix this! 😉
