Hello everyone,

some time ago, I bought an Ikea Pax wardrobe and noticed that the air circulation inside is rather poor. Especially with clothing hanging low and in the lower sections with closed fronts, the air hardly seems to refresh. I am interested in how to modify the Pax wardrobe to improve air circulation without compromising stability or appearance too much. Do you have experience with modifications such as adding ventilation holes, replacing certain panels, or perhaps installing small fans? Any advice on materials or alternative solutions is also welcome. Thanks in advance!

Could you please explain in more detail what such partial segments might look like and how to best attach them?

Sure, gladly.

Typical Pax back panels consist of several boards that either interlock or fit into grooves. You can remove the middle back panel(s) and replace them with an air-permeable panel, such as a perforated MDF board or metal sheet with holes, custom cut to size. You secure this panel with screws or brackets, using the original grooves or screw holes whenever possible. If the back panel consists of several boards at the bottom, it’s usually sufficient to use a perforated version only for the lower boards.

This keeps the cabinet stable because the upper and side back panels remain intact, while providing good airflow from bottom to top.

When working with the panel, make sure it sits flush to avoid sharp edges and that the fastening is secure. I also recommend checking the cabinet’s wall mounting beforehand if it is fixed to the wall — stability will then be ensured through the wall attachment.
