Hello everyone, I am planning to get a Pax wardrobe from Ikea, but I have an important question beforehand: Is the Pax wardrobe easy to modify? Specifically, I am interested in how simple it is to change the size afterwards, move shelves, or replace doors. It would also be helpful to know if the wardrobe can be easily expanded later on, or if that usually involves a lot of effort. I have already read through some forums, but the opinions vary a lot. Maybe someone here has practical experience with modifying it and can share how difficult or easy it actually is. Thanks in advance!

Simple remodeling? Yes, if only shelves or doors are being replaced.
Complex: changing dimensions, modifying modules – no, then a new purchase or full renovation is necessary.

Briefly and clearly: Pax is modular, but that does not mean you can modify the wardrobe in any way you like. Individual components are fixed and must be purchased new if you want to change the size. For minor adjustments, it is very well designed.

I really enjoyed remodeling my Pax wardrobe! Moving the shelves especially went smoothly. I was a bit worried about changing the doors at first, but it turned out to be much easier than expected! So don’t worry, you can do it too 😊 And if you take your time, it will definitely be a rewarding experience!

This is the most complicated part! You can’t simply widen or shrink individual modules (e.g., the cabinet body). You have to completely disassemble the cabinet and reassemble it, possibly with new components.

This is an important point for me: In practice, if I bought a 100 cm (40 inch) wide module two years ago and now want one that is 150 cm (60 inch) wide, does that mean the only option is to rebuild with a new module—so a straightforward modification of the old cabinet is not possible? Or are there experiences with, for example, custom solutions or tricks to expand it?

Sure, some DIY enthusiasts use wooden boards and extra screws to connect two modules like a cabinet. However, this requires some craftsmanship skills and carries a certain risk regarding stability. For everyday use, I can recommend it if you want to stay truly flexible – but Ikea itself does not provide this solution.

I can confirm that many users build the cabinet by screwing individual modules together. It is important to
- align them properly,
- adjust the feet accordingly,
- or additionally install gliders or dampers.

However, a true size expansion through modular extensions is only possible by purchasing new individual modules – it won’t work without some DIY. There are only a few ‘official’ add-ons available.
