Hello everyone, I am currently planning to remodel my kitchen using IKEA Metod cabinets to make it accessible. I am particularly interested in how to modify Metod kitchen cabinets and components so that they are easily reachable and usable for people with limited mobility. Does anyone have experience with this or tips for adjusting the lower and upper cabinets, including how to make drawers easier to operate or installing special handles? I am especially concerned about whether there are proven solutions for height-adjustable modules or alternatives to the traditional tall cabinet. I look forward to ideas and practical suggestions!

For wheelchair users, having work surfaces that can be accessed underneath is very importantThank you, that really resonates with me, especially the part about accessibility underneath the work surfaces, which sounds challenging. How do you handle this specifically with Metod? Do you completely remove the plinth, and how do you then stabilize the work surface? What materials or additional supports would you recommend to ensure the structure lasts longer? Your advice is very helpful, as I’m not yet sure how sturdy these modifications can be.

How do you stabilize the work surface afterward?Good question! Many users recommend reinforcing the countertop material from underneath using metal brackets or sturdy wooden battens. Since the side panels of a Metod cabinet usually support the weight, you need to provide an alternative when removing the base. A metal frame above the opening offers good stability – you can build this yourself or have a carpenter customize it. It is important to ensure the load capacity can safely support people leaning on it during work.
If you have good DIY skills, I can recommend metal brackets and sturdy screws to secure the panel. Alternatively, there are height-adjustable table legs that can be screwed under the worktop. The Ikea kitchen will definitely be more stable if you use something like this. Otherwise, it can quickly feel wobbly.

And which materials or additions would you recommend to make the construction last longer?Hardwood strips or metal profiles with a thickness of at least 2-3 cm (0.8-1.2 inches) are ideal for reinforcement. Avoid using materials that are too thin, as they tend to give way, especially under lateral load. When a professional reinforces the structure, welding on the metal frame is often preferable to just using screws.
That already sounds like a solid plan! I also really appreciate how practical craft techniques are combined here with system solutions. Accessibility doesn’t automatically mean: buying everything new. Often, it’s just smart adjustments that can be done with a bit of enthusiasm for remodeling.
Thank you all – this really helps me move forward! My next step will be to look into the pulls and handle strips, while simultaneously checking how I can stabilize the work surface. I also find the idea of height-adjustable table legs very interesting, and I will definitely keep that in mind. I’ll keep you updated here on how things progress.
