Hello everyone, I am currently planning to remodel my kitchen using IKEA Metod cabinets to make it accessible. I am particularly interested in how to modify Metod kitchen cabinets and components so that they are easily reachable and usable for people with limited mobility. Does anyone have experience with this or tips for adjusting the lower and upper cabinets, including how to make drawers easier to operate or installing special handles? I am especially concerned about whether there are proven solutions for height-adjustable modules or alternatives to the traditional tall cabinet. I look forward to ideas and practical suggestions!

In my experience, the key to accessibility lies in adjusting work heights and ease of access. IKEA Metod offers narrow pull-outs that improve visibility. It is worthwhile to design base cabinets to allow a work height between 70 and 85 cm (28 and 33 inches), depending on user needs. For tall cabinets, internal pull-outs or soft-close hinged doors can be used, which are easier to operate. It is also important to consider generous clearances, especially when a wheelchair is used.

Hello naplo, I’m happy to share some basic tips for making Metod kitchen units more accessible. The height of the cabinets is crucial. You can adjust the standard plinth height or even choose special base frames to reduce the working height. Although IKEA does not officially offer electric lift systems, you can look for third-party options. Larger pull-out drawers instead of fixed shelves improve accessibility and visibility. Handle rails are better than small knobs because they are easier to grip. Avoid doors with round knobs; for example, flap doors are more practical.

Hello everyone! I recently remodeled a Metod kitchen for a friend to be "almost barrier-free": height-adjustable base units are not an official IKEA solution, but with rolling carts and suitable table legs, work surfaces can be adjusted quite easily. Smart pull-out drawers and handle rails make operation much more convenient. I also found it important to keep the kitchen bright – good lighting helps prevent tripping hazards. It doesn’t always have to be very complicated; often, a bit of creativity is enough.

I think this is an important point. However, the question of compatibility between third-party systems and the Metod standard arises. Especially regarding stability and load capacity, particularly for work surfaces, no compromises should be made. I would recommend carefully reviewing the specifications before purchasing and possibly having the installation checked by professionals.

If you want to raise the cabinets, use adjustable feet. For more freedom of movement, drawers with stoppers are practical. Metal handle strips are ideal because they are sturdy and provide a good tactile feel.

Just as an addition: For wheelchair users, having clearance under the work surfaces is very important, with at least 70 cm (28 inches) of free height under the countertop. This is not standard with Metod, but it can be achieved by removing the plinth and adjusting the side panels – precise measurements are essential here.
