Good morning everyone, I recently installed Ikea METOD countertops in my kitchen and am now trying to find the best way to care for and clean them. My main questions are: What is the best method to clean METOD countertops without damaging the surface, and what specific tips are there to prevent scratches? I understand there are some special cleaners, some recommend mild household products, and others suggest very specific procedures. I would like to benefit from your experiences, especially regarding the prevention of very fine scratches that often only become visible after some time. Any ideas, specific cleaning products, or general approaches would be very helpful! Thanks in advance.

Which ingredients should be specifically avoided?Great question! In general, strong solvents like acetone, turpentine, or alcohol-based cleaners should be avoided. Bleaching agents and harsh abrasive cleaners containing scrubbing particles are also not recommended. For laminate-like surfaces of METOD, the protective coating can be damaged, leading to faster scratching. Real wood or solid wood finishes are also sensitive to excessive moisture and unsuitable cleaning products. When in doubt, it’s better to use mild cleaners and avoid harsh treatments.
Great to see so much knowledge gathered here! I love my METOD countertop and take really good care of it! 😊 My tip: Always use thin felt pads under anything that could scratch, and wipe it daily with a damp cloth to prevent dirt from drying in. This way, the countertop stays looking great for a long time! And don’t panic about stains—just gently clean them with some dish soap! You’ve got this!
Good morning, everyone! 😄 I have to say, I always find it funny how kitchen countertops seem to have a mind of their own: as soon as you look away, there’s the first scratch or a small stain. But don’t worry: the METOD countertops are quite durable if you take care of them like Dustin and geralu recommend – gently and with mild cleaning.
That’s exactly how I see it too – that’s the secret! And hey, if you want to give it a little extra love from time to time: a small amount of the right care oil, and your countertop will feel almost as smooth as freshly polished hardwood floors. 😉 So: stay cool, maybe cut sharply somewhere else, and you’ll enjoy it for years to come!

One small tip from me before you lose the battle against scratches: I make it a habit to wash the cutting boards right after each use and never leave dirt or food residue on the countertop – this helps minimize abrasion marks.
I completely agree with that. This is especially important for Ikea boards. So if you’ve wiped them down, go over them again with a dry cloth to prevent anything from drying in. This way the surface stays protected and you’ll get fewer scratches 🙂

Avoid prolonged contact with water, especially on the edges, since moisture can cause swelling.
