Good morning everyone, I recently installed Ikea METOD countertops in my kitchen and am now trying to find the best way to care for and clean them. My main questions are: What is the best method to clean METOD countertops without damaging the surface, and what specific tips are there to prevent scratches? I understand there are some special cleaners, some recommend mild household products, and others suggest very specific procedures. I would like to benefit from your experiences, especially regarding the prevention of very fine scratches that often only become visible after some time. Any ideas, specific cleaning products, or general approaches would be very helpful! Thanks in advance.

Simply use warm water with a mild detergent and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive sponges or cleaning agents. To avoid scratches, it is best to use cutting mats.

Hello Pra_nu, I’ll give you a more detailed answer: For the Ikea METOD countertops, I recommend wiping them regularly with a soft, damp cloth. If there is grease or heavier dirt, you can dissolve a mild dish soap in water. It is important to wring the cloth well so that no moisture remains on the countertop. To avoid scratches, always use cutting boards and never place hot pots directly on the countertop, as heat can also damage the surface. I have also had good experiences with a special countertop treatment that refreshes the protective layer and helps to reduce minor micro-scratches. However, this is not necessary, just a helpful tip.

Scratches can only be prevented by proper handling: use cutting boards and avoid sharp or abrasive cleaning agents. For cleaning, simply use lukewarm water and a soft cloth; that is sufficient.

Hello everyone! I’d like to share a brief guide on protecting and cleaning METOD countertops:

- Cleaning: Always use a soft sponge or microfiber cloth, warm water, and a mild detergent, such as a pH-neutral dish soap. Avoid harsh cleaners, chlorine-based substances, or abrasive products, as they can damage the surface protection.

- Stains: For stubborn stains, you can apply a diluted vinegar solution (1:4) onto a cloth—never spray directly onto the countertop. Let it sit briefly, then wipe thoroughly.

- Scratch protection: Cutting boards are essential; also, do not place hot pots directly on the surface without a trivet or heat pad. For sensitive surfaces, there are special care oils that should be applied sparingly and only occasionally to make the surface more resistant.

- General advice: Avoid prolonged contact with water, especially at the edges, since moisture can cause swelling.

I hope these tips are helpful!

Thank you for the quick and detailed responses so far. A brief follow-up question: You always mention avoiding aggressive cleaning agents. Which specific ingredients should be avoided? I sometimes tend to use stronger cleaners when dealing with stubborn stains. Are there particular components in METOD panels that can especially damage the surface? Additionally, I’m interested to know if there are differences among the various decor versions of the METOD surfaces (e.g., real wood look vs. laminate) that require different care.
