Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and would like to simply expand it because I need more storage space. My question is: How can Hemnes shelves be easily and, above all, as securely as possible extended without having to buy entirely new furniture or carry out major modifications? Are there any recommended extension sets, additional components, or tips to consider? I would also appreciate advice regarding connection methods (screws, connectors). Thanks in advance!

The Hemnes shelving series is modular, but most of the connectors are designed only for modules of the same height. This means that if you combine different heights, there are no standardized IKEA connectors available to ensure stable connections. In such cases, I recommend:

- Using metal brackets or special mounting angles to securely join modules of different sizes.
- Adding extra wall mounting as a safety measure.
- Using custom-made wooden strips to reinforce the connection points can also help.

This requires a bit more effort, but it allows you to create a stable structure despite varying shelf heights.

Exactly! I also had some initial difficulties when trying to combine different heights. I simply bought some inexpensive metal brackets from a hardware store and screwed them on the inside. Since then, the shelf has been really stable – and it even looks neat when the screws are properly countersunk and you use good-quality brackets. A small but very effective upgrade that I can definitely recommend to everyone!

A simple Hemnes shelf extension works best with original IKEA connectors when the modules are of the same height. For different heights, alternative fastenings such as metal brackets or wall attachments are necessary. Also, make sure the load distribution is appropriate to avoid stability issues.
