Hello everyone, I am planning to securely mount my IKEA Hemnes shelves on various walls in my apartment. Since the furniture is relatively large and heavy, I don’t want to compromise on safety. Most of my walls are drywall with some sections made of solid masonry. I am mainly interested in: which fasteners are suitable for the different wall types? How deep and at what distance should the screws be placed? Are there specific brackets or angles that are recommended? And how can I prevent the shelf from tipping over or loosening over time? I have already read some general guides, but I am looking for as specific and practical advice as possible that relates directly to Hemnes shelves. Thank you in advance for your help!
For drywall, always use appropriate hollow wall anchors, as this significantly increases load-bearing capacity. For masonry, use standard anchors and screws. Always fasten screws into the designated tab of the Hemnes shelf and use at least two mounting points to prevent the shelf from tipping.

For solid masonry, hammer-in anchors or chemical anchors are suitable for even greater stability. It is important to use a metal or cable detector before drilling and to place the screws preferably into the shelf brackets designed for wall mounting. Screw spacing: at least 30 cm (12 inches), depending on the length of the shelf.

Are there any official recommendations from IKEA regarding the fastening materials? I have the two small brackets on the back that come with the shelf, but do they have to be used? And if so, are the screws included sufficient, or is it advisable to use higher-quality materials from the hardware store?
IKEA’s assembly instructions for Hemnes shelves recommend using the included brackets and screws but do not provide openings for wall mounting. Therefore, the forum suggests purchasing wall fasteners separately, such as anchors and screws suitable for the type of wall.
For safety, it is indeed important to prevent the shelf from tipping over by securely fastening it to the wall. The tabs on the shelf are designed for this purpose. It is advisable to use two to three anchors per shelf section, placed as high as possible on the wall.
Alternatively, sturdy metal brackets attached to the bottom or back of the shelf can provide additional stability, especially if the shelf stands on a soft surface or is heavily loaded.
The screws included by IKEA are usually sufficient for assembling the shelf itself but not for wall mounting. In this case, certified fasteners are preferable.

A combination of two to three anchors per shelf compartment, distributed at the highest possible mounting points, is recommended. Thank you for the precise recommendation. I was wondering whether to drill the screws more in the middle or very close to the top. From what you said, it sounds like I should drill as close as possible to the upper edge to prevent tilting, is that correct?
