Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Hemnes shelving unit and would like to simply expand it because I need more storage space. My question is: How can Hemnes shelves be easily and, above all, as securely as possible extended without having to buy entirely new furniture or carry out major modifications? Are there any recommended extension sets, additional components, or tips to consider? I would also appreciate advice regarding connection methods (screws, connectors). Thanks in advance!
Hey Joanron, great question – expansions like these are really fun! 😊 I simply extended my Hemnes shelving unit with additional shelves from the same series. It’s important to connect the new shelves securely, for example with IKEA fastening brackets or metal brackets from a hardware store. This way, everything is sturdy and safe! Also, if you plan to stack multiple modules on top of each other, be sure to screw them together and possibly fix them to the wall. That provides much more stability. Just give it a try and keep at it!

For the extension, it is best to choose the same model since the dimensions and attachment points will then fit precisely. The connection between individual shelves is usually made with connector screws, which IKEA sells separately – they are called "connectors" or "connector sets" by IKEA. Additionally, when assembling, make sure to secure the units to the wall to prevent tipping. If you want more flexibility, there are also optional shelves available as add-ons, in case you want to consider that.
Hello Joanron, I would recommend using IKEA’s own connectors for this to avoid any issues with fit. 😉
If you want to try something different, simple furniture connectors from a hardware store can sometimes work well – this way you can put together your own small shelving system, almost like a puzzle! And don’t worry, if you take the wall mounting seriously, the whole thing will be stable and won’t look shaky despite being DIY. Have fun building!

Could you also please tell me if these connectors can be used with all Hemnes shelves, for example with the lower or narrower models as well? I ask because I want to combine different sizes to optimize the storage space according to my room layout. Are there any limitations, or is this generally feasible?
