Hello everyone,

I am planning to reorganize my home using IKEA Platsa furniture and want to make the most of the available storage space. I am especially interested in which combinations and modular options from the Platsa system you would recommend for efficiently furnishing both small and large rooms.

I am considering variations between tall cabinets, low units, and the different doors, drawers, and baskets available. What is the best way to create a solution that remains flexible while providing as much storage space as possible?

Are there any clever tips or lesser-known modules that offer especially large capacity?

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

As a supplement to LION43: Upper units can indeed be built yourself or you can use individual shelves that rest on Platsa units. IKEA also often offers suitable storage toppers, such as chests or narrow compartments, which can be placed on top.

For the boxes, I recommend combining both sturdy and flexible models. Use sturdy ones for shoes and heavy items, and flexible fabric boxes for seasonal clothing or blankets.

Use baskets on the shelves. They are versatile and durable. For heavy items, there are metal baskets that are sturdy.

Regarding the tops: IKEA does not offer specific add-on modules for Platsa. However, many DIY enthusiasts create small shelves or closed covers to extend storage capacity up to the ceiling.

You can maintain flexibility by attaching modular elements with casters at the bottom or at least choosing lightweight parts that can be easily rearranged.

As for the combination of drawers and baskets: use drawers for small, frequently used items, and baskets for larger, less organized belongings.

I still believe that drawers are always only half the solution. They only make sense for people with insufficient storage space who want to fill every corner.

Large baskets or boxes on shelves combined with taller units offer a better mix.

And yes, building upper cabinets is often the best compromise – after all, Ikea doesn’t really want you to use every inch of space 😄

Who here has been complaining about drawers? 🤭 I love my drawers! They’re perfect for the little everyday treasures that would otherwise get lost in corners.

But honestly, I have everything: baskets, drawers, open shelves. Like a good salad, every ingredient has its place and flavor. 🍅🥗🫑

Stay relaxed and make your storage come alive!

How does it work with top units? IKEA doesn’t seem to offer them directly, or is that something you make yourself?

Exactly, LION43, usually it’s DIY or a third-party solution. For example, I cut simple wooden boards and placed them on top. It’s important to assemble the modules flush with each other so the board sits securely. This increases the storage height and prevents dust from falling in from above.
