Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the Ikea Platsa system and wondering if there are storage boxes that fit specifically with this shelving system or at least work very well with it.

I want to store my things neatly, preferably in boxes that either come directly from Ikea or are offered by third-party suppliers and fit perfectly into the compartments of the PLATSA units.

Are there any experiences with dimensions, recommendations, using boxes from other series, or custom solutions?

I would also appreciate tips regarding materials, durability, and ease of handling.

How do you handle this? Are there really suitable boxes that can simply be slid into the PLATSA system without any modifications, or is that generally an issue?

Looking forward to your answers!

There are no direct Ikea boxes specifically designed for PLATSA. Instead, I use the VARIERA boxes, which mostly fit well into the compartments. I don’t use any others, as the dimensions usually don’t match.

I’m familiar with this issue. I’ve looked into it and found that most boxes are either slightly too big or too small for the shelving compartments. That can be frustrating, especially when you want to organize things neatly. I ended up getting boxes from the hardware store that can be easily adjusted, but of course, that’s not a perfect solution. On the other hand, PLATSA also offers the option to combine open shelves, doors, and drawers – maybe that helps with organization.

Hello Flopi,

PLATSA is designed modularly and does not have storage boxes made specifically for it, but the system works very well with VARIERA boxes from Ikea. The VARIERA series comes in various heights, widths, and depths and can often be used effectively.

Alternatively, you can also choose neutral boxes from third-party suppliers. It is important to use the internal dimensions of the PLATSA compartments and select boxes that fit them optimally. Some users report that boxes with lower edges are preferred because they are easier to grip.

The quality should be sturdy enough to withstand frequent removal and cleaning. Plastic boxes are practical, but decorative fabric boxes can also be used, for example, when storing under doors or behind drawers.

Important: Before purchasing, check the exact measurements of the PLATSA units and compare them with the box dimensions.

Thanks for the honest assessment. I had hoped that Ikea might have focused more on accessories for PLATSA by now, but it seems that the whole storage box issue is still handled unofficially.

I will definitely do that. Are there any general standard dimensions for PLATSA that I should keep in mind? Maybe then I could specifically look for suitable boxes.

The PLATSA modules are generally available in widths of 60 cm, 80 cm, and 120 cm, with a standard depth of 35 cm (14 inches). The height varies depending on the shelf and configuration.

This means boxes should ideally be no wider than about 58.5 cm (23 inches) to fit inside with some clearance, about 33 cm (13 inches) deep, and the height can vary between 8 to 40 cm (3 to 16 inches) depending on the compartment dimensions.

VARIERA boxes are a common choice here, as, for example, the VARIERA box (35x15x28 cm / 14x6x11 inches) fits well into several PLATSA compartments. For other sizes, I usually look for third-party manufacturers with interior dimensions close to these measurements, after taking precise measurements myself.
