Hello everyone,
I am currently planning the design of a shelving unit using the Ikea Platsa system and am particularly interested in the doors. My question to the community is: Does Ikea Platsa offer doors that come standard or alternatively with magnetic catches?
I am mainly looking for a simple and reliable solution that allows the doors to close easily without constant rattling or closing noise.
If anyone has experience or information about suitable products, accessories, or possible modifications, I would be very grateful for a detailed response. It would be especially helpful to know whether these are official Ikea parts or which alternative solutions you would recommend.
Thank you in advance!

Thank you for the initial responses.
I am still curious about how durable these magnetic catches are in practice, especially with frequent use.
Do they show noticeable signs of wear, or do the magnets noticeably lose their holding power over time? Has anyone had experience with how well they work together with the other hardware of the PLATSA doors?
And does anyone know if other magnetic solutions from the furniture fittings category can be used without issues, or if there are any specific considerations with PLATSA?

Hi Philippe,
I have had the VARIERA magnetic catches installed on my PLATSA shelving unit for over a year now and am very satisfied. The magnetic force remains stable, and it is still easy and pleasant to open and close the doors.
As a precaution, I secured the catches with screws because adhesive can sometimes weaken over time.
Regarding the mechanism: the magnet does not open the door by itself but only keeps it closed – this complements the hinge perfectly without any negative effect.
Good luck with your project!

I find this topic interesting because I believe that a magnetic lock is not always the best solution.
In my opinion, a magnetic lock can complement the mechanics mentioned, but it does not replace a proper locking system, especially if you need a child-safe option.
Mechanical solutions or a handle with push-to-open functionality would be more suitable in such cases. Magnetic locks alone can give way under stress, which is not always reliable.

To the point:
I recommend choosing a locking mechanism based on the furniture’s intended use. For standard household furniture without children, magnetic catches offer an elegant solution that supports quiet closing.
However, if security or very frequent use is a factor, other systems should be considered.

Thank you for the insightful contributions! To summarize, it seems there are no official PLATSA doors with magnetic locks from Ikea, but the functionality can be effectively enhanced with add-on solutions like the Variera magnetic catches, as long as the relevant conditions are considered.
The information on the differences between pure magnetic locks and mechanical systems in terms of security and durability was particularly helpful.
I will take a closer look at the Variera magnetic catches and hope they integrate well with my PLATSA frame. If I encounter any issues, I will report back here.
Best regards!
