Hello everyone, I am looking for practical solutions from IKEA, specifically from the PAX series, for storing various types of electronic devices. I want to find a way to store the equipment efficiently while maintaining some order and providing protection against dust, cable clutter, and heat buildup. My question is: Are there functional or specially designed PAX solutions that are particularly suitable for storing computers, consoles, routers, or similar devices? If so, which modules, interior fittings, or combinations work best? Thanks in advance for your expertise!
One important aspect not to underestimate is heat generation. A gaming PC or a NAS produces a significant amount of heat during operation, which can accumulate inside closed PAX cabinets. I recommend leaving the back of the cabinet partially open or actively assisting with fans. PAX as a system does not include integrated fans or ventilation, but you can remove the back panels like the VARIERA panels and replace them with perforated metal sheets or create your own openings. Also, keep an eye on the load capacity of the shelves, as electronic devices are often heavier than clothing or books. Pay attention to the maximum weight per shelf. For interior fittings, IKEA KOMPLEMENT shelves are suitable because they are sturdy and fit well with PAX. This gives you a quite flexible base.

Although these are not specifically designed for PAX, they can be conveniently mounted on the inside panels of the cabinet. Another tip is to organize the cables primarily at the back by cutting openings in the rear panel. It is also practical to place devices that remain permanently plugged in in lower compartments to ensure a reliable power supply. If you have the NAS or router, you might consider a small drawer that can be left open for ventilation, allowing the devices to be protected while still well ventilated.

I hid my old TV, game console, and router inside a PAX cabinet, and not only does it look tidy, it almost feels like a tech hide-and-seek game! That sounds really cool! I just wanted to add that especially with older devices, it’s important to keep an eye on heat build-up. My advice: if you have doors with glass fronts, there should at least be vents or slots at the top and bottom to allow warm air to escape. Otherwise, there is a risk of overheating. So it’s best to do a little DIY by drilling holes in the back or installing small fans. This way, your equipment stays healthy in the long run!
In summary, IKEA PAX does not offer a manufacturer-standard storage solution specifically designed for electronic devices, but it provides a flexible base for individual customization. Important factors include: - adequate ventilation (e.g., ventilation holes or slots in the back panels) - suitable shelves with appropriate load capacity - built-in or self-installed cable management for organization - use of glass or open fronts to keep devices visible and accessible - customized combination of interior fittings (shelves, drawers, inserts) For the purpose of storing electronics, PAX can certainly be used as a modular solution if these factors are considered and properly implemented during installation. However, there is no ready-made, pre-configured solution available from IKEA specifically for this use.

However, there is no specific, pre-configured solution from IKEA for this. That was a conclusion I had already suspected. Still, thank you for the clear summary. Would you recommend addressing the ventilation issue more through technical means (fans, ventilators) or structural solutions (open doors, air vents, perforated back panels)? And what about dust accumulation? PAX is usually used with closed doors—does this have negative effects on the equipment due to dust buildup? I would appreciate any tips on specific materials or brand accessories within the IKEA range to securely and neatly accommodate the equipment.

Would you recommend addressing the ventilation issue more through technical means (fans, ventilators) or structural measures (open doors, ventilation slots, perforated back panels)? For me, it depends on how the space is used and the room situation. If you frequently use the equipment and it requires airflow, structural solutions like ventilation slots or open doors are helpful and low-maintenance. However, if the cabinet is located in a draft-free area but has many devices operating inside, a technical solution with fans can be sensible. I recommend keeping it as natural as possible and ensuring good air circulation—that keeps the effort minimal. Regarding dust: closed doors generally protect against dust, but lack of airflow can lead to buildup inside. A combination of regular cleaning and air exchange is ideal. In my view, a semi-open design or glass doors offer a good compromise.
